Board Member Josephine C. Garcia Earns NJSBA Board Leader Certification

NEWARK, N.J. – The New Jersey School Boards Association (NJSBA) has announced that Josephine C. Garcia has become a Certified Board Leader through the NJSBA Member Academy.  

Garcia, a veteran Board member and former President of the Newark Board of Education, is the third Newark Board of Education member to attain the Certified Board Leader certification. She previously earned NJSBA certification as a Master Board Member.

The rigorous requirements to earn the certification include earning a minimum of 60 Board Member Academy credits, attending at least 10 Essex County School Boards Association meetings, three NJSBA Workshops, five full-day statewide or regional professional development programs, passing an exam covering areas of Board member responsibilities, serving in a leadership role for at least one year, and never violating the School Ethics Act.

Superintendent León and Board of Education President Hasani K. Council congratulated Board Member Garcia on her achievement.

The NJSBA Board Member Academy provides training and leadership development opportunities that promote effective school governance and help local boards meet the evolving needs of their communities.
