Newark Public Schools Appoints Sandra Marques as Assistant Superintendent

NEWARK, N.J. – Newark Public Schools today announced the appointment of Sandra Marques as the district’s new Assistant Superintendent of the East and Central School Leadership Team. With more than 25 years of distinguished service in the Newark Public Schools, Marques brings a wealth of experience in school leadership, instructional improvement, and program development that will continue to advance the district’s mission of students achieving excellence.

Marques most recently served as Director of Career and Technical Education (CTE) for Newark Public Schools, where she developed districtwide enrichment programs, created work-based learning opportunities, and led the planning and launch of a state-of-the-art CTE facility. Under her leadership, the district expanded summer programs, strengthened industry partnerships, and supported student leadership through Career and Technical Student Organizations.

“Sandra Marques is a highly respected instructional leader who has proven her ability to strengthen school communities, improve student outcomes, and elevate our educational programs,” said Superintendent León. “Her leadership across multiple schools and departments makes her uniquely prepared to serve as Assistant Superintendent and further our efforts to ensure every student thrives.”

“I am deeply honored to serve as Assistant Superintendent for Newark Public Schools, a district that has shaped both my personal and professional journey,” said Marques. “I have dedicated my career to supporting Newark’s students, families, and educators, and I look forward to continuing that work. Together, we will build on the incredible progress we’ve made, expand opportunities for all learners, and ensure that every child receives the high-quality education they deserve.”

A champion for academic excellence and inclusive learning environments, Marques previously served as Principal of Salomé Ureña Elementary School and Hawkins Street School, both of which earned recognition for academic improvement and innovation under her leadership. She opened and led new schools, built positive school cultures, and implemented systems of professional development, academic intervention, and family engagement that helped meet the needs of diverse student populations.

Fluent in English, Spanish, and Portuguese, Marques has long been an advocate for English Language Learners, students with special needs, and underrepresented communities. She is a graduate of Montclair State University with a Master’s in Educational Leadership and holds a B.A. in Elementary Education and English from New Jersey City University. She has also completed a year-long Principal Leadership Academy at Relay Graduate School and holds certifications in multiple educational and administrative platforms.

“Sandra Marques embodies what it means to be a servant leader,” said Board of Education President Hasani K. Council. “Her unwavering commitment to Newark’s students and families has made a lasting difference in every school she has led, and we are honored to welcome her into this critical leadership role.”

As Assistant Superintendent, Marques will oversee key instructional and operational initiatives, support principals and school leaders, and help shape districtwide strategies that promote high-quality teaching and learning.

Marques will assume her new role in the 2025-2026 school year.
