NEWARK, N.J. – The New Jersey School Boards Association (NJSBA) has announced that Josephine C. Garcia has earned Master Board Member certification. The certification is the NJSBA’s second-highest level of distinction.

Garcia, a veteran Board member and former President of the Newark Board of Education, first completed the Certified Board Member (CBM) level and then fulfilled a series of additional requirements. These included earning a total of 40 cumulative Board Member Academy credits and attending a minimum of eight county association meetings.

She also participated in at least two NJSBA delegate assemblies, attended two annual NJSBA Workshop Conferences, and engaged in at least three statewide or regional professional development programs. Additionally, she either passed a comprehensive examination covering board responsibilities or submitted a portfolio of her work. As required, she maintained a record free of any violations of the School Ethics Act.

“The success of any school system begins with knowledgeable and dedicated leadership,” said Superintendent León. “I commend Ms. Garcia for her commitment to professional growth and her steadfast service to the Newark community. Her achievements through the NJSBA Board Member Academy reflect the high standards we hold for ourselves and our collective mission to achieve excellence in serving every student and family in our District.”

“Professional development and continuous learning are essential to effective school board leadership,” said Newark Board of Education President Hasani K. Council. “Ms. Garcia has shown her strong commitment to our students, families, and the responsibilities entrusted to us as board members.”

The NJSBA Board Member Academy provides training and leadership development opportunities that promote effective school governance and help local boards meet the evolving needs of their communities.
