Earlier this month, Special Assistant Alan Usherenko had the opportunity to present at SXSW EDU in Austin, Texas, highlighting Newark Public Schools’ integration of AI into instruction and its successful implementation of the Khan Academy platform in the North Ward schools. SXSW EDU emerged in 2011 and has since evolved into a leading platform for the future of learning, focusing on the exploration of innovative ideas, advancements, and dialogue surrounding education and learning. Assistant Superintendent Branco attended the conference, supporting the District’s ongoing efforts to advance instructional technology. What garnered national attention is the remarkably high level of student engagement with the platform, demonstrating how a strategic focus on instructional technology can drive real impact. While AI in education is still in its early stages, the North Ward has been leading efforts to train and invest in teachers, provide students with access to AI-driven resources, and help them become familiar with these tools. How AI will ultimately shape student learning is still being explored, however, the North Ward’s deep engagement with instructional technology has already set a national standard.
