Autism Acceptance is not just a month-long celebration—it's a mindset and a movement NBOE is committed to carrying forward everyday. What started with the theme “Level Up Autism Acceptance” this April has evolved into a lasting commitment to equity, inclusion, and empathy that will continue to shape the District’s culture long beyond Autism Acceptance Month. The journey began with the 7th Annual Autism Acceptance Kickoff on World Autism Day, April 2, 2025, where district schools and central office staff came together with a shared commitment to leveling up autism acceptance. The event launched a series of activities, including the creation of Arrow-Shaped Empowerment Walls, where each sticky note added—from kindergartners to principals—reflects the ongoing effort to empower and amplify the voices of students with autism. These walls symbolize not just awareness, but active acceptance—a tangible reminder that every individual is valued and seen as an integral part of the community.
Throughout April, NBOE schools collaborated on inclusive activities across all grade levels, and the OSE Autism Acceptance Calendar became a key tool for keeping families engaged. With parent workshops, student activities, and community events, families stayed connected and involved, continuing the conversation about autism acceptance beyond just one month. On April 8th, the Office of Special Education hosted the 2025 Breakfast with Moms, featuring Faith Evans, the founder of the Ryders Room Foundation. This heartfelt gathering focused on empowering moms, allowing them to connect, share strategies, and ask autism experts questions. The event underscored the District’s commitment to ensuring parent voices remain central in ongoing work, extending acceptance beyond awareness to tangible action. Leveling up autism acceptance is an ongoing effort. Together, NBOE is building a culture of inclusion, compassion, and empowerment that extends beyond Autism Acceptance Month, creating a future where every student is respected, valued, and able to thrive.
