District schools engage in innovative ways to celebrate Inclusive Schools Week

The Office of Special Education joined in the nationwide celebration of inclusion during Inclusive Schools Week. This year’s theme, “Every Voice Matters,” seeks to empower individuals to share their unique perspectives and make their voices heard. When students feel heard they are more likely to share their perspectives, engage in classroom discussions, collaborate with peers, and take ownership in their learning.

Throughout the week, schools across the District hosted a variety of activities to highlight the importance of inclusive environments where every voice is heard, valued, and respected. Exposure to different perspectives and experiences enhances critical thinking skills and broadens students’ understanding and appreciation of their community. At Michelle Obama Elementary School, students received a visit by a service dog named Sherlock. Students were able to ask questions and meet Sherlock and learn how Sherlock supports a teenager with exceptionalities. Students at Bruce Street School welcomed students from Michelle Obama Elementary and taught them signs to communicate using American Sign Language. At Abington Street School, students came together for a special book read led by Ms. Ospina to celebrate Inclusive Schools Week. East Side High School invited all students to enter a poster contest to express their voices through art. At Speedway Avenue School, students created a display to celebrate the gift of their unique voices and foster a school-wide appreciation for inclusion and diversity.

Inclusive practices are not confined to just one week, but are woven into the everyday experience for students. At Park Elementary School, all teachers made a commitment to have a powerful impact on the lives of students with exceptionalities. Teachers have committed to working together to plan monthly activities to increase collaboration among all students. At Wilson Avenue School, teachers meet on a monthly basis to discuss and review how to improve their co-teaching strategies.

A special thank you to all schools that assisted in making Inclusive Schools Week a memorable and impactful celebration.
