NEWARK, N.J. – The New Jersey School Boards Association (NJSBA) announced that Board of Education Member Kanileah Anderson has earned New Board Member certification. The certification is the first tier of the NJSBA’s Board Member Academy, a professional development program that recognizes governance excellence.

Anderson has served on the Board since January 2024.

“I am proud of Ms. Anderson for achieving the New Board Member certification from the New Jersey School Boards Association,” said Superintendent León. “During her service on the Board, she has demonstrated a deep commitment to professional growth and responsible governance. Her dedication to learning and service strengthens our Board and sets a strong example for those who believe in the power of education and community leadership.”

The certification achieved by Anderson is designed to provide new members with a strong foundation in effective governance. To qualify, she accumulated at least ten Board Member Academy credits and attended a face-to-face Governance I: New Board Member Orientation. She also participated in at least one statewide or regional professional development program, attended two county association meetings, and took part in an annual NJSBA Workshop Conference. Like all certification recipients, she met eligibility requirements and maintained an unblemished ethics record.

“Kanileah Anderson’s achievement is a reflection of her dedication to the students, families, and schools of Newark,” said Newark Board of Education President Hasani K. Council. “Earning this certification so early in her tenure speaks volumes about her commitment to effective governance and her desire to make a meaningful impact. We are proud to have her on our team.”

The NJSBA Board Member Academy provides training and leadership development opportunities that promote effective school governance and help local boards meet the evolving needs of their communities.
