NEWARK, N.J. – Newark Public Schools officially opened Branch Brook School as the District’s first elementary school dedicated solely to serving students with autism. District officials welcomed local leaders, parents, and guardians to celebrate this historic milestone in providing more services within the District to support students with autism.
The opening of the Branch Brook School helps families obtain the services they need for their children without enrolling in a program outside the city. The school provides services, including on-site speech therapy, occupational therapy, and physical therapy, allowing Newark families to access critical services in Newark.
“Our goal is to ensure that all students, regardless of their needs, have access to a high-quality education right here in Newark,” said Superintendent León. “The opening of Branch Brook School is a powerful step forward in our mission to serve every child with excellence.”
Superintendent León welcomed local dignitaries to the event, including New Jersey Senate Majority Leader M. Teresa Ruiz and Jaimie White of the Rutgers Developmental Disabilities Center. The center is a partner of the Branch Brook School. Board President Hasani K. Council, Vice President Vereliz Santana, Board Member Helena Vinhas, Deputy Superintendent Yolonda Severe, and Chief of Staff Havier Nazario were also in attendance.
“This school is a shining example of what can happen when we invest in all of our children,” said Board of Education President Hasani K. Council. “Branch Brook School provides not only critical services but also a sense of belonging, joy, and pride. It reflects our district's deep commitment to educational excellence for all students.”
“The opening of Branch Brook School is deeply personal and profoundly meaningful for our families and educators,” said Assistant Superintendent Carolyn Granato. “It represents years of planning, advocacy, and dedication to ensuring that students with autism receive the specialized support they need to thrive. We are proud to offer a nurturing environment where every child is celebrated for who they are and empowered to reach their full potential.”
Granato acknowledged Director of Special Education Marilyn Mitchell for her efforts in support of the Branch Brook School.
Principal Cristina Pennetti has been leading the Branch Brook School since it began operating in September. She previously served as a supervisor in the district’s Office of Special Education and is known for her deep commitment to student and family engagement. Principal Pennetti maintains a robust schedule of student and family activities and collaborates closely with Parent Teacher Organization President Zondria Bey.
“The partnership between staff and families is what makes our school so special,” said Principal Pennetti. “We are building a space where students with autism can thrive academically, socially, and emotionally.”
