In 1912, when New Jersey Governor Woodrow Wilson was elected as President of the United States, Grover Cleveland School was built. This school has plenty of architectural detail and character. Through a century of educating the youth of Newark’s Central Ward, it has seen many graduations, recitals, and assemblies in its auditorium. This auditorium was different from the others; it had oak wall panels, walnut wood casings, decorative plaster crown molding, and a grand chandelier in lieu of recessed lighting.
This project could not have been a renovation. It had to be restored. The Facilities Team, along with outside vendors, took on the challenge and completed Phase 1 of this project, and it looks absolutely beautiful. In Phase II, the team will complete the balcony with new flooring, seating, and lighting. The District will also partner with a historian to properly restore the decorative moldings and stone sculptures.
