Superintendent León Congratulates the Arts High School Girls Basketball Team on winning the team’s first State Championship

NEWARK, N.J. – Superintendent León released the following statement following the Arts High School Girls Basketball Team winning the NJSIAA Group 1 State Championship this afternoon, defeating New Providence, 57-45. It is the first state championship in the school’s history.

“It is so great that in the middle of Women’s History Month, these young women made history as the first Arts High School Girls Basketball state champions,” said Superintendent León. “The entire district is so proud of their incredible accomplishment, and all of the hard work they put into making this dream a reality. This historic achievement reflects the extraordinary dedication, discipline, and teamwork these young women have demonstrated throughout the season. It is also a testament to their coaches, families, teachers, and school leaders who support them every day. Arts High School and the entire Newark Public Schools community celebrates this remarkable accomplishment.”

Board of Education President Hasani K. Council also offered his congratulations.

“On behalf of the Newark Board of Education, I congratulate the young women of the Arts High School Girls Basketball Team on winning the first state championship in the program’s history,” said Board President Council. “These student-athletes have made their school community proud and have inspired students across our district. Their success shows that when Newark students set high goals and work together to achieve them, there is no limit to what they can accomplish. We celebrate this milestone and look forward to many more achievements from these outstanding young leaders.”
