NEWARK, N.J. – Divine Kibe, a senior at the Newark School of Global Studies is the student representative to the Newark Board of Education. Kibe serves as the voice for more than 41,000 Newark students, working to ensure that their experiences, needs, and ideas help shape policy and district direction.
Prior to attending the Newark School of Global Studies, she attended Dr. E. Alma Flagg School. Kibe is deeply engaged in student life and community service. She participates in Model United Nations, volunteers regularly at a local hospital, and recently joined her school’s Crafting Club, a creative outlet she describes as a welcome space to decompress and connect with peers. Kibe is in the school’s Global Business pathway where she has been immersed in Mandarin Chinese, one of the school’s two languages with Arabic being the other.
Motivated by a passion for science and helping others, Kibe plans to pursue a career in medicine. She intends to major in neuroscience with the goal of becoming a neurosurgeon.
“I wanted to be the student representative because I believe every student deserves to have their voice heard directly in the rooms where decisions are made,” Kibe said. “I want to make sure students across Newark, from every background and school, feel represented, supported, and inspired. To me, being a representative isn’t just about only speaking, it’s about listening, connecting, and creating change that truly matters.
Kibe hopes to focus on student wellness, advocacy, and engagement. She plans to expand opportunities for students to share feedback, spotlight student achievements, and promote dialogue around mental health, school resources, and overall wellbeing.
“I hope to strengthen the bridge between students and the Board by encouraging open communication and understanding,” she said. “I want to highlight student achievements, create more opportunities for student input, and ensure that our concerns about mental health, school resources, and overall wellbeing are truly heard. Above all, I hope to leave behind a sense of unity and hope so that every student, regardless of their school or story, feels seen, valued, and empowered.
“Divine is intelligent, compassionate, globally minded, and deeply committed to service,” said Superintendent León. “Her passion for elevating student voices reflects the values we hold dear across this district. We are thrilled to welcome her to the Board dais and I am confident that her leadership will ensure our students are well represented.”
“We are honored to welcome Divine as our new student representative,” said Board of Education President Hasani K. Council. “Her maturity, thoughtful perspective, and dedication to her peers will make her an invaluable voice in our work. Divine is ready to help strengthen the connection between the Board and the students we serve. We look forward to her contributions throughout the year.”
“Divine embodies what it means to be a global scholar and a servant leader,” said Principal Nelson Ruiz. “She approaches every opportunity – whether in the classroom, Model UN, or community service – with curiosity and purpose. We are incredibly proud to see her step into this important role and know she will represent her peers with grace, intelligence, and heart.”
Outside her leadership roles, Kibe enjoys crafting, exploring new places, and spending time with friends. She describes herself as a believer in compassion and community.
“Kindness and curiosity can change the world,” she said. “I’m also the kind of person who loves cheering others on because I believe the best kind of success is the one we celebrate together.”
Kibe will serve on the Board for the 2025-2026 school year.
