Newark Public Schools Student Awarded Prestigious Posse Scholarship to Case Western Reserve University

Karen Inahuazo, Bard High School Early College senior, intends to study nursing

Karen InahuazoNEWARK, N.J. – Karen Inahuazo, a senior at Bard High School Early College, has been awarded a Posse Foundation Scholarship to Case Western Reserve University.

“This opportunity truly means everything to me. It is more than just a scholarship. It is a reminder that my hard work, my sacrifices, and my dreams are seen and valued,” said Inahuazo.  “Being selected further inspires me to continue following my dreams and goals. It also means a lot to my family, whose support and encouragement have shaped who I am. I see this as a chance not only to change my own future but to make them proud and give back to my community.”

Karen plans to major in nursing and hopes to become either a nurse anesthetist or a NICU (neonatal intensive care unit) nurse. Her interest in healthcare grew from helping her uncle manage his diabetes medication and her natural love for caring for babies and young children.

“We are so very proud of Karen,” said Superintendent León. “She is a student whose compassion, determination, and dedication to helping others are exemplary and should inspire us all. The Posse Scholarship recognizes her brilliance and her promise, and we cannot wait to see the extraordinary impact she will make in the medical field and beyond.”

“Karen’s story reflects the power of perseverance and the deep support system within Newark’s families and schools,” said Board of Education President Hasani K. Council. “She is a remarkable, inspirational young woman whose hard work has led her to this outstanding opportunity. The Board of Education celebrates her success and looks forward to the bright future ahead of her.”

“Karen is an extraordinary student whose intellectual curiosity, empathy, and discipline embody the spirit of Bard High School Early College,” said Dr. Rafael Inoa, the school’s principal. “She has excelled in a demanding academic program while giving so much to her family and community. We are tremendously proud of her, and we know she will thrive at Case Western Reserve University.”

At school, Inahuazo has embraced a rigorous academic environment while contributing to school and community life. Her extracurricular activities include the debate team, swimming, softball, and dance club. She is also a member of the National Honor Society and the Hispanic Student Association. In her time away from school, she tutors her cousins and supports her parents at home.

A resident of Newark’s Ironbound neighborhood, Inahuazo is the oldest of three sisters and attributes her success to her close-knit, supportive family. One of her younger sisters was with her when Inahuazo received the news that she had been awarded the scholarship.

“At that moment, I was overwhelmed with emotion,” she said. “My whole family was just as excited when I told them right after.”
