Newark Public Schools Board Approves $1.677 Billion Budget

Plan will strengthen facilities, sustain programs, and advance strategic plan

NEWARK, N.J. – The Newark Board of Education has approved a $1.677 billion budget that supports continued investment in school facilities, maintains funding for critical student services and programs, and advances the district’s ambitious goals, priorities, and strategies under The Next Decade: 2020–30 strategic plan.

The budget was presented by School Business Administrator Dr. Jose Fuentes, who outlined a financial plan designed to sustain academic progress while addressing long-term infrastructure needs across the district.

The spending plan is bolstered by Governor Mikie Sherrill’s proposed state budget, which includes a $60.6 million increase in aid to Newark Public Schools. The additional funding will support essential operating costs, including special education services, student transportation, and instructional programming.

“This budget reflects our unwavering commitment to providing every student with the resources and opportunities they need to succeed,” said Superintendent León. “With the continued support of the State and the strategic use of our resources, we are not only sustaining the progress we have made but also investing in the future of our schools through improved facilities and expanded opportunities for our students.”

The district also plans to utilize funds from its capital reserve for projects including the construction of New Media High School and a new playground at Belmont-Runyon Elementary School.

Once the state budget is finalized, the district’s tax levy will increase by 2 percent, rising from $143,902,866 in 2025–2026 to $146,780,923. The impact of this increase on a Newark property at the average assessed value of $191,065, is a $39.94 annual increase in property taxes. With this tax increase, Newark taxpayers’ total 10-year contribution to Newark Public Schools will be more than $1.5 billion by the end of 2026-2027.

“This budget strikes a responsible balance between fiscal stewardship and our obligation to meet the needs of Newark’s students and families,” said Board of Education President Hasani K. Council. “We are maintaining critical programs, investing in our facilities, and doing so in a way that is mindful of taxpayers. Most importantly, this budget keeps us moving forward as a district committed to excellence and equity.”

The 2026-2027 budget continues to align with the district’s long-term strategic priorities, including strengthening academic outcomes, expanding high-quality school options, and fostering partnerships that enhance student experiences and career pathways.
