Tatiana Cintron chosen to represent schools statewide as keynote student speaker
NEWARK, N.J. –Tatiana Cintron, a junior at the Newark School of Global Studies, has been named a recipient of the Youth Leadership Award by the New Jersey Chinese Teachers Association (NJCTA). The award honors exceptional students who demonstrate excellence in Chinese language and cultural studies, as well as leadership and service both inside and outside the classroom.
The Newark School of Global Studies is one of 12 new schools opened under Superintendent León’s leadership. This school focuses on diplomacy and global business by immersing students in two languages: Arabic or Chinese.
Tatiana is enrolled in the Chinese and International Business track at the Newark School of Global Studies, where she has distinguished herself through her academic dedication, cultural curiosity, and global perspective. She is interested in studying archeology and serving in the Peace Corps.
As part of this recognition, Tatiana was selected as the student representative to deliver a speech on behalf of all award recipients, representing students from kindergarten through higher education from New Jersey’s schools. During her remarks, Tatiana addressed the audience in Mandarin and English, expressing gratitude to her family, teachers, and the Newark School of Global Studies school community.
“From Chinese Clubs, Honors societies, trips to museums, to language immersion camps abroad and traveling to Mainland China, my school has provided me with so many new experiences and supported me in my journey of studying the Chinese language along with its culture,” she said. “I have studied hard and grown a passion for studying Mandarin, which has led me to my upcoming trip to China in April.”
“This recognition speaks volumes about Tatiana’s dedication to learning, her respect for culture, and her willingness to lead,” said Superintendent León. “Students like Tatiana remind us why access to world-class language instruction matters. She is not only mastering a new language, but using that knowledge to build bridges, represent others, and make Newark proud on a statewide stage.”
“Tatiana’s achievement reflects the power of high expectations and meaningful instruction,” said Board of Education President Hasani K. Council. “Her being selected to speak on behalf of students from across New Jersey shows the confidence, poise, and leadership our students develop when they are challenged and supported. We are incredibly proud of her.”
“Tatiana embodies what it means to be a leader and a lifelong learner,” said Xiaoqin Yin, Lead Chinese Mandarin Teacher. “Her passion for Chinese language and culture, combined with her confidence and willingness to represent others, makes her an outstanding ambassador for our program and for Newark Public Schools.”
The Youth Leadership Award recognizes students whose dedication to Chinese language learning extends beyond academics to include cultural understanding, community engagement, and leadership. Tatiana’s honor reflects her commitment to these values and her positive impact on her school community.
Department Chairpersons Meshele Hardy and Xiaoqin Yin supported the coordination of the event and related recognitions.
