A Valentine For Newark Basketball Lovers: Four District Teams To Play In Essex County Tournament Semifinals on February 14th

Two boys teams, two girls teams to vie for the chance to play for county championships

Newark is in the Essex County Basketball Tournament Semifinals

NEWARK, N.J. – It will be a Valentine’s Day to remember for Newark basketball lovers this Saturday, February 14th, as four Newark Public Schools high school basketball programs have advanced to the Essex County Basketball Tournament semifinals.

“This is an extraordinary moment for Newark Public Schools athletics, and we could not be prouder of the four teams representing our city in the county semifinals,” said Superintendent León. “Their success reflects remarkable talent, hard work, and the unwavering commitment of our coaches, teachers, and families who support our students on and off the court.”

“Having four Newark Public Schools teams reach the Essex County Tournament semifinals is a testament to the excellence, determination, and heart that define our student-athletes,” said Board of Education President Hasani K. Council. “These student athletes continue to show what is possible when passion meets preparation, and all of Newark will be cheering them on this Valentine’s Day.”

Tickets are available at the door: $8 (adults) and $5 (students).

All games will be held at West Orange High School with the following schedule:

11:00 a.m. GIRLS
University High School (14-7), ranked No. 4, will play No. 1 ranked Caldwell High School (18-1)

The University High School Girls Basketball Team has powered through the season with relentless defense and explosive scoring, and the kind of discipline that defines championship-caliber play. As they head into the semifinals, the Lady Phoenix carry unmistakable momentum.

1:00 p.m. GIRLS
Arts High School (18-3), ranked No. 3, will play No. 2 ranked West Orange High School (21-3)

The Arts High School Girls Basketball team is making history of its own, entering the semifinals at 17–3 overall. The Lady Jaguars now stand just one win away from potentially securing the program’s first-ever ECT Finals appearance, marking a milestone for Arts High School athletics.

3:00 p.m. BOYS
Arts High School (14-6), ranked no. 3, will face No. 2 ranked St. Benedict’s Prep (15-6)

The Arts High School Boys Basketball team has delivered an outstanding season, advancing with a 14–6 overall record. Their semifinal appearance follows a strong performance in the quarterfinals, where they defeated a talented Newark Collegiate squad.

5:00 p.m. BOYS
Malcolm X Shabazz High School (21-0), ranked No. 4, will face No. 1 ranked Seton Hall Prep (13-6)

The Shabazz Bulldogs are in the midst of a historic run, entering the semifinal round with an undefeated 21–0 overall record, and being ranked 13th in the state this week. Their momentum continues after a thrilling double-overtime victory over East Orange in the quarterfinals, one of the most exciting games of the tournament to date.
