Louis “Cito” Maisonave Jr. is a lifelong Newark resident and proud product of the Newark Public Schools. Raised by hardworking parents who believed deeply in faith, service, and community, he is one of three siblings carrying those lessons forward.

Maisonave attended First Avenue School, St. Benedict’s Prep, and graduated from Our Lady of Good Counsel High School. From a young age, he watched his father give back—as a coach, a mentor, and President of the Roberto Clemente Little League. It was through his father’s example, and the faith that grounded their family, that Maisonave learned the true meaning of service and sacrifice.

Following that path, Maisonave has spent his life mentoring youth, coaching, and working to make Newark stronger. His commitment to serving others led him into public safety: he served as an Essex County Sheriff and now works as a Newark firefighter. He also serves as President of the Hispanic Firefighters Association of Newark and District Leader of the 27th District.

Rooted in faith and community, Maisonave is a proud advocate for Newark’s young people. He is committed to ensuring Newark Public Schools—the system that shaped him—provide students with mentorship, leadership opportunities, and the tools they need to succeed. He believes investing in youth today is an act of faith in a stronger, more equitable Newark tomorrow.

Maisonave lives in the North Ward and is a proud father of two sons, both graduates of Newark Public Schools: Angel, a Rutgers graduate and Newark firefighter, and Justin, a nursing student at Essex County College.

Guided by faith, family, and a lifelong commitment to service, Maisonave continues the work he witnessed growing up: lifting up the next generation and fighting for a Newark where every student has a real shot at a better future.
