NEWARK, N.J. – Surrounded by family, teammates, coaches, educators, and district leaders, Malcolm X Shabazz High School junior Adekunbi Adetayo announced Monday morning that he has committed to Vanderbilt University, choosing the Southeastern Conference program from among numerous scholarship offers from some of the nation's most prestigious colleges and universities.

“The key factors for me were the environment and where I felt I fit best,” said Adetayo, with his mother, Lola Osula, and father, Adetunji Adetayo, sitting next to him. “It was a tough decision because I had great relationships with many schools. But Vanderbilt made me realize that I wanted to start a new journey in a place where I felt I could thrive and grow.”

Adetayo thanked his family, teammates, coaches, teachers, and supporters for helping him reach this milestone.

“This is just the start,” he said. “There are greater things to do.”

The announcement capped a remarkable journey for Adetayo, who did not begin playing football until his freshman year of high school. In just three years, he has developed into one of New Jersey’s most highly recruited student-athletes.

The commitment ceremony was held at Malcolm X Shabazz High School and featured remarks from school and district leaders, coaches, and supporters who praised Adetayo’s work ethic, character, and academic dedication.

Newark Public Schools Superintendent León encouraged Adetayo and his fellow student-athletes to continue pursuing ambitious goals while remaining grounded in the values that have fueled their success.

“I need you to dream big,” Superintendent León told the students in attendance. “Along the way, accomplish the goals that matter – respect, discipline, teamwork, and academic achievement. Adekunbi is role modeling what it means to pursue excellence and create opportunities through hard work and determination.”

Athletic Director Noel Colon spoke of the recent Shabazz Football alums who are playing for elite schools – among them, Omari Gaines and Zaiden McDonald, who play for Stanford; and Judah Pruitt who is at Boston College.

Today, Adetayo adds his name to that proud tradition,” Colon said.

Malcolm X Shabazz High School Head Football Coach Nasir Gaines recalled Adetayo’s first days in the program and praised the support of his family.

“I remember when Adekunbi came here and had never played football a day in his life,” Gaines said. “To see him now earning a full scholarship opportunity is priceless. He gives young people throughout Newark and beyond hope. He’s showing everyone that with hard work and commitment, great things can happen.”

Other dignitaries who participated in the ceremony included Assistant Superintendent Dr. Maria Ortiz and City Councilman Patrick Council.

“Today is about much more than football,” said Principal Dr. Atiba T. Buckman. “Today is about commitment, character, and the countless hours of preparation, sacrifice, and determination that brought Adekunbi to this moment. His journey serves as an inspiration to every student in this building.”

“In just a few short years, he transformed himself from a young man who had never played football into one of the nation’s most sought-after recruits, while excelling in the classroom and representing his family, his schools, and his community with pride,” said Newark Board of Education President Hasani K. Council. “We are extremely proud of Adekunbi and look forward to watching him continue to make history at Vanderbilt University.”
