1,400 spectators cheer on 38 teams as students celebrate spirit, teamwork, and excellence under the theme “Dream Big and Cheer Loud.”
NEWARK, N.J. – Newark Public Schools’ Office of Extended Learning hosted its largest elementary school cheerleading competition to date on Saturday, bringing together 38 teams and more than 1,400 spectators for a day filled with athleticism, school spirit, and community pride at Essex County College.
The annual event, now in its fifth year under the leadership of Director of the Office Extended Learning Dr. Julianne Bello, has grown significantly since its inception. This year’s record participation and attendance prompted organizers to move the event from its previous home at Weequahic High School to the larger Essex County College gymnasium.
Centered around the theme, “Dream Big and Cheer Loud,” the showcase celebrated the talent, dedication, and enthusiasm of Newark Public Schools students while highlighting the positive impact of extracurricular activities on student development.
“This event is a celebration of joy,” said Bello. “For five years, we have watched this showcase grow bigger and better. ‘Dream Big and Cheer Loud’ represents exactly what we want our students to do, which is believe in themselves, celebrate their accomplishments, and bring positive energy to their schools and community.”
The event was preceded by a spirited march down West Market Street, from Science Park high School to the Cleo Hill, Sr. Physical Education Building on the college campus.
“Our cheerleaders demonstrate the same qualities that drive success in academics and life: commitment, dedication, perseverance, teamwork, and school pride and spirit,” said Superintendent León. “This showcase highlights the extraordinary talents of our students and reminds us of the joy that comes from belonging, achieving, and supporting one another. We are proud of every student who participated and grateful to the coaches and families who help make opportunities like this possible.”
Board of Education President Hasani K. Council praised the students and families whose enthusiasm has fueled the event’s continued growth.
“The incredible turnout for this year’s competition is a testament to the passion and commitment of our students, coaches, families, and school communities,” said Council. “Events like this create lasting memories while reinforcing the importance of teamwork, leadership, and positive school culture. We are proud to celebrate our students and the joy they bring to Newark.”
