NEWARK, N.J. – West Side High School senior Jordan Bowers-Strickland added her name to the ranks of New Jersey’s elite track and field athletes, capturing the NJSIAA Group 3 State Championship in the Long Jump at Northern Burlington Regional High School.

Bowers-Strickland secured the state title with a winning jump of 18 feet, 10.25 inches, earning the first-place medal against some of the top competitors in New Jersey and bringing statewide recognition to West Side High School and Newark Public Schools.

The championship was one of two standout performances for Bowers-Strickland at the meet. She also finished third in the 100-meter hurdles, posting the second-fastest time in West Side High School history. Her time was just 0.06 seconds shy of her own school record of 14.60 seconds.

“Jordan’s state championship is a remarkable achievement and a testament to what can be accomplished through hard work, perseverance, and an unwavering commitment to excellence,” said Superintendent León. “She has represented West Side High School and Newark Public Schools with distinction both on the track and field, and in the classroom. We congratulate Jordan, her family, Coach Meekins, teachers, and everyone who has supported her journey. We look forward to cheering her on at the Meet of Champions and as she continues her academic and athletic career at Coppin State University.”

Head Coach Rickey Meekins praised Bowers-Strickland's dedication and versatility.

“Jordan’s success is the result of countless hours of dedication, discipline, and hard work,” Meekins said. “Winning a state championship while continuing to perform at such a high level in multiple events speaks volumes about her character and commitment. We are extremely proud of her accomplishments and look forward to seeing her continue to excel.”

Newark Board of Education President Hasani K. Council said Bowers-Strickland’s achievement reflects the strength of student-athletes across the district.

“Jordan’s state championship is a proud moment for the entire Newark community,” Council said. “Her success demonstrates the extraordinary talent that exists in our schools and the opportunities that are created when students are supported by dedicated coaches, teachers, and families. We celebrate this tremendous accomplishment and commend Jordan for serving as an outstanding role model for younger student-athletes throughout our district.”

West Side High School Principal Akbar Cook said Bowers-Strickland’s accomplishments extend beyond the track.

“Jordan has been a leader on our campus and a champion on the track,” Principal Cook said. “What makes this accomplishment so special is that it reflects the determination, discipline, and resilience she brings to everything she does. Winning a state title is an incredible achievement, but those of us who know Jordan are equally proud of the person she has become and the example she sets for her classmates. We are excited to see her compete at the Meet of Champions and know she will continue to make West Side proud at Coppin State University.”

Following graduation, Bowers-Strickland will continue her academic and athletic career at Coppin State University, where she has earned a full athletic scholarship.
