NEWARK, N.J. – The Newark Board of Education officially conferred the title of Superintendent Emerita upon Dr. Marion A. Bolden during a special ceremony on June 18, recognizing her extraordinary contributions to Newark Public Schools and her decades of dedicated service to the students, families, and teachers of Newark.

The honorary designation celebrates Dr. Bolden’s remarkable journey from Newark Public Schools student to teacher, administrator, superintendent, historian, and enduring advocate for public education.

“Receiving this honor from the district that shaped my life and that I have dedicated my life to is deeply meaningful,” Dr. Bolden said. “Newark Public Schools has always been more than a school system to me. It has been my home, my purpose, and my passion. I am grateful for the opportunity to have served this community and proud of all that Newark’s students and teachers continue to accomplish.”

Superintendent León praised Dr. Bolden’s enduring influence on the district and its students.

“Dr. Bolden has spent her life demonstrating what it means to lead with purpose, integrity, and an unwavering belief in the potential of Newark’s children,” Superintendent León said. “Her impact can be seen in the countless students whose lives were changed by opportunities she helped create and in the teachers she mentored throughout her distinguished career, including mine. We are proud to honor her with this well-deserved recognition.”

The Newark Board of Education noted that Dr. Bolden’s contributions have already been memorialized through the naming of a student center in her honor, the Dr. Marion A. Bolden Student Center. The designation of Superintendent Emerita further recognizes a lifetime of service and a legacy that continues to inspire future generations.

“Dr. Marion A. Bolden’s life is a testament to the transformative power of public education,” said Newark Board of Education President Hasani K. Council. “From student leader to superintendent, she has dedicated her career to expanding opportunities for Newark’s children and strengthening our schools. Naming her Superintendent Emerita ensures that her legacy of service, leadership, and excellence will forever remain a part of Newark Public Schools.”

A proud Newark native, Dr. Bolden’s leadership story began as a student in Newark Public Schools, where she served as Class President at Clinton Place Junior High School and later as President of the National Honor Society at South Side High School, now Malcolm X Shabazz High School, where she graduated in 1964. After graduating from Montclair State University in 1968, she returned to Newark Public Schools to begin her career as a mathematics teacher at Barringer High School in the fall of that year.

Over the next several decades, Dr. Bolden rose through the ranks of district leadership, serving as Chairperson of Mathematics at Arts High School and was later appointed as the district’s first Director of Mathematics for Newark Public Schools. She eventually rose to the rank of Assistant Superintendent for Teaching & Learning and also served one year as the Assistant Superintendent for Secondary Schools. Her expertise, vision, and commitment to academic excellence ultimately led to her appointment as Superintendent of Newark Public Schools in 1999, a position she held until 2008.

Throughout her tenure, Dr. Bolden championed educational excellence, accountability, community engagement, and student achievement, helping shape the future of Newark Public Schools and inspiring generations of teachers and students.

Following her retirement, Dr. Bolden continued her commitment to preserving and celebrating the district’s history. In 2009, she founded the Newark Public Schools Historical Preservation Committee and continues to serve as its chairperson. Through this work, she has helped safeguard the stories, history, milestones, and achievements that define Newark Public Schools’ rich legacy.

Family members, friends, former colleagues, students, and community leaders joined district officials for the ceremony celebrating Dr. Bolden’s achievements and her lasting impact on Newark Public Schools and the City of Newark.

The title of Superintendent Emerita is reserved for distinguished former superintendents whose leadership and service have left an enduring mark on Newark Public Schools.
