“Joining Forces, Extending Impact” initiative brings together district, charter, private, and parochial school leaders to strengthen educational outcomes for all Newark students
NEWARK, N.J. – In an effort to strengthen collaboration across all sectors of education in the city, Superintendent León, in collaboration with all school leaders in Newark, hosted a full-day leadership retreat, bringing together principals and school leaders from district, charter, private, and parochial schools.
“This was about bringing together the leaders who shape the daily experiences of our students and creating space for meaningful collaboration,” said Superintendent León. “When we align our efforts across all schools in Newark, we strengthen our collective ability to serve every child in this city. This Spring Leadership Retreat is about joining forces and extending impact.”
Leaders from across Newark’s diverse educational landscape gathered at the Newark Museum of Art for the day-long retreat, marking their first meeting in a single, structured setting focused on shared learning, alignment, and collective impact.
Under the retreat’s theme of “Joining Forces Extending Impact,” attendees engaged in a series of interactive learning sessions covering topics such as Artificial Intelligence in Education, Using Data to Drive Instruction, Social-Emotional Learning and Mental Health, and Chronic Absenteeism. In each session, school leaders fostered collaboration, shared best practices, and built relationships with peers with whom they have not had the structured opportunities to engage. Participants were intentionally grouped to include a mix of educational leaders from the different types of schools, ensuring diverse perspectives and encouraging new professional connections.
Newark Mayor Ras J. Baraka and New Jersey Senate Majority Leader M. Teresa Ruiz delivered plenary remarks that underscored the importance of collaboration in advancing educational equity and opportunity.
“Bringing together leaders from every type of school in Newark reflects our shared responsibility to the children of this city,” said Board of Education President Hasani K. Council. “When we break down silos and work collaboratively, we strengthen not only our individual schools, but the entire educational ecosystem that supports our students’ success.”
“This gathering reflects our deep respect for the work of school leaders and our commitment to supporting them,” León said. “The principalship is one of the most challenging roles in education and today was about investing in those leaders while reinforcing that we are all in this together.”
Participants were also invited to provide feedback through a post-event survey, which will inform future collaborative efforts and help refine strategies for continued partnership.
The retreat advanced one of six priorities stated in the district’s historic strategic plan, The Next Decade: 2020-30, to build strong reciprocal relationships between the district and organizations supporting Newark’s students.
