East Side High School Earns Reaccreditation from the Middle States Association

Prestigious designation affirms school’s commitment to continuous improvement and academic excellence

Middle States AssociationNEWARK, N.J. – East Side High School has earned reaccreditation from the Middle States Association of Colleges and Schools Commission on Elementary and Secondary Schools, reaffirming its status as a school committed to high standards of teaching, learning, and continuous improvement.

The Middle States reaccreditation is widely recognized as a hallmark of excellence in education, reflecting a rigorous, peer-reviewed process that evaluates a school’s mission, instructional programs, student performance, and overall effectiveness. Schools that earn reaccreditation demonstrate a sustained commitment to growth and accountability in serving their students and communities.

Newark Public Schools leaders praised the accomplishment as a testament to the dedication of East Side High school’s administration, teachers, Central Office and school staff. Since the return to local control, all six comprehensive high schools have successfully received accreditation with East Side High School being the first to receive reaccreditation.

“This reaccreditation is a powerful affirmation of the transformative work taking place at East Side High School,” said Superintendent León. “It reflects a steadfast commitment to excellence, continuous improvement, and ensuring that every student is prepared for success in college, career, and life.”

Board of Education President Hasani K. Council added, “Earning reaccreditation from the Middle States Association demonstrates that East Side High School continues to meet the highest standards of educational quality. We commend the entire school community for their focus, collaboration, and dedication to student achievement.”

Located in Newark’s Ironbound section, East Side High School serves more than 2,000 students and offers a range of academic opportunities, including Advanced Placement courses and dual-enrollment programs that allow students to earn college credit.

The reaccreditation process involves a comprehensive self-study and external review, ensuring that schools not only meet established standards but also engage in strategic planning for future growth. By earning this designation, East Side High School joins a select group of institutions recognized for their commitment to educational excellence and continuous improvement.

“This achievement belongs to our entire school community,” said East Side High School Principal Carlos Rodriguez. “Our staff works tirelessly to create an environment where students are challenged, supported, and inspired every day. This reaccreditation reflects that shared commitment.”

As Newark Public Schools continues to advance its strategic plan, The Next Decade: 2020–30, the reaccreditation of East Side High School underscores the district’s ongoing progress in delivering high-quality educational experiences for all students.
