NEWARK, N.J. – In observance of Autism Acceptance Month, Newark Public Schools’ Office of Special Education partnered with community organizations and Grammy Award-winning R&B artist Faith Evans to host A Morning of Strength and Support: Celebrating Mothers of Children With Autism.
“This event was about recognizing the strength, resilience, and unwavering love of mothers who advocate for their children every day,” said Superintendent León. “At Newark Public Schools, we are committed to ensuring that every student, and every family, has access to the support they need to thrive. Today was a powerful reminder that no one is alone on this journey.”
The event brought together more than 70 mothers of children with autism for a morning dedicated to encouragement, shared experiences, and access to resources. Evans, who is herself a mother of a child with autism, served as the keynote speaker, offering heartfelt reflections and inspiration drawn from her personal journey.
Evans is the founder and CEO of Ryder’s Room, an organization committed to supporting children with disabilities and their families by connecting them with high-quality resources and professionals.
“As a mother of a child with autism, I know firsthand the strength it takes to navigate this journey. It’s not always easy, but it is filled with purpose and love,” said Evans. “Through Ryder’s Room, and through gatherings like this, my goal is to remind mothers that they are not alone, and that there is a community here to support them, celebrate them, and help them access the resources their children deserve.”
Following the keynote, attendees participated in a panel discussion featuring experts from the Rutgers University Douglas Developmental Center, who shared insights on services, strategies, and supports available to families.
“When we uplift parents, especially those navigating unique challenges, we strengthen our entire community,” Board of Education President Hasani K. Council. “We are proud to partner with leaders like Faith Evans and organizations that bring compassion, expertise, and hope to our families.”
The event was attended by district and school leaders, including Assistant Superintendent of Student Support Services Carolyn Granato and Branch Brook School Principal Cristina Pennetti, both of whom emphasized the importance of building strong partnerships between schools and families.
“This morning was about recognition and connection,” said Assistant Superintendent Granato. “The mothers we honored today are extraordinary advocates for their children, and they deserve spaces where they can be supported, informed, and uplifted. Our Office of Special Education is committed to walking alongside our families, ensuring they have access to the resources, expertise, and community they need to help their children succeed.”
“Our mothers are some of the strongest advocates and caregivers you will ever meet,” said Principal Pennetti. “Hosting this event at Branch Brook School was an honor, and we are grateful for the opportunity to create a space where they could feel seen, supported, and celebrated.”
Through initiatives like this, Newark Public Schools continues to advance its commitment to inclusive education and comprehensive support for students with special needs and their families, aligned with the district’s strategic plan, The Next Decade: 2020–30.
