NJDOE Declares Newark Public Schools High Performing

New Jersey’s State Board of Education unanimously affirms declaration

NEWARK, N.J. – The New Jersey Department of Education (NJDOE) has informed the Newark Public Schools that the district has satisfied the weighted indicators in each of the five areas of the New Jersey Quality Single Accountability Continuum (NJQSAC) review process and has been designated as “high performing.”

Upon the recommendation of Commissioner Kevin Dehmer, the State Board of Education certified Newark Public Schools as providing a thorough and efficient system of education last night. The State Board’s decision was unanimous.

“As the Superintendent of New Jersey’s largest school district, I will always be the first to proclaim that we still have so much to do,” said Superintendent León. “But make no mistake about it, we have accomplished so much with our historic ten-year strategic plan, and we’re going to ‘Keep On Moving!,’ which is the theme of the sixth year of the strategic plan.”

“I am overwhelmed at this major milestone,” said Board of Education President Hasani K. Council. “We have been working so hard for this moment, and it has arrived.  I want to commend Superintendent León, his entire leadership team, with special emphasis on the deputy, assistant superintendents, principals, teachers, instructional staff, and our parents and their children."

“Anyone who really cares about the city of Newark should be ecstatic at this moment,” said Superintendent León. “We are grateful to Commissioner Dehmer and Essex County Superintendent Joseph Zarra for their leadership and support, as well as their respective staff for their assistance and support. This accomplishment is credited to the principals, school leaders, teachers, and the instructional staff at the schools and in the central office. We are indebted to the parents, guardians, advocates, and children of the Newark Public Schools who believe in us as we believe in them.”
