District Business Department has earned the recognition for 22 consecutive years.
NEWARK, N.J. – The Newark Public Schools has been awarded the Certificate of Excellence in Financial Reporting by the Association of School Business Officials International (ASBO) for its Annual Comprehensive Financial Report (ACFR).
This prestigious award recognizes school districts that demonstrate a high level of financial transparency and commitment to fiscal accountability. Newark Public Schools’ financial report met or exceeded the rigorous criteria established by ASBO’s Certificate of Excellence Review Team, earning the district national recognition for excellence in school business management.
“This award recognizes the professionalism and integrity of our financial team and their commitment to the highest standards of transparency,” said Superintendent León. “It is further evidence of our district’s dedication to earning and maintaining the trust of our students, families, staff, and community.”
The Certificate of Excellence is among the most respected honors in school financial reporting and supports a district’s efforts to strengthen stakeholder confidence and demonstrate responsible fiscal stewardship. The Certificate of Excellence Review Team commended Newark’s financial report as “high quality” and encouraged the district to continue its outstanding work. This review occurs after the fiscal year ends, and the award is given during the following year. This recognition is for fiscal year 2023-2024. Newark Public Schools is on track for the review of 2024-2025 to be conducted this year.
“This recognition is a reflection of the tireless work of our Business Office staff under the leadership of Valerie Wilson, our School Business Administrator,” said Board President Hasani K. Council. “We are proud to be recognized nationally for our financial practices and transparency.”
This ASBO Certificate of Excellence Award marks the 22nd consecutive year the district’s Business Office has earned the honor.
Established in 1972, ASBO’s Certificate of Excellence in Financial Reporting Program is designed to encourage and recognize excellence in the preparation of the Annual Comprehensive Financial Report (ACFR). Reports are reviewed by a panel of professional auditors and finance experts to ensure they meet stringent program standards.
