The Mayor’s Book Club Virtual Chat with the 9th grade students will occur on May 27, 2021 from 10:00AM-11:30AM.

The current text, When They Call You a Terrorist: A Story of Black Lives Matter and the Power to Change the World (Young Adult Edition), by Patrisse Cullors and asha bandele, identifies poignant themes—policing, Black Lives Matter, Civil Rights, Mass Incarceration, and beyond. The HSLT and Office of Teaching & Learning have worked collectively with the 20 student panelists to ensure preparedness for this event.

  • Each 9th grade student will receive a hard cover copy of the book (2,800 copies distributed) as well as a digital copy of the book: When They Call You a Terrorist: A Story of Black Lives Matter and the Power to Change the World (Young Adult Edition), by Patrisse Cullors and asha bandele
  • Guest Poets: Naomi Extra and Ras Heru Stewart
  • A panel of 20 students representing American History High, Arts High, Central High, East Side High, Malcolm X Shabazz High, Newark Evening, Newark School of Global Studies, Technology High, University High, and Weequahic High.
  • The remaining 9th grade students will attend and have the opportunity to ask questions in the chat.
