Newark Student Leaders Share Optimism and Determination at Superintendent’s Council of Students Meeting

First quarterly meeting highlights engaging learning, expanding opportunities, and students’ commitment to growth

NEWARK, N.J. – Excitement about hands-on learning, appreciation for supportive school environments, and determination to meet higher academic expectations marked students’ feedback as Superintendent León held his first quarterly meeting of the school year with the Superintendent’s Council of Students.

The council brings together class presidents of each grade from all Newark Public Schools high schools. Its quarterly meetings provide the Superintendent an opportunity for a two-way dialogue and hear directly from student leaders about their experiences and take the pulse of the district’s high school student community.

“Our students’ perspectives are essential to understanding how our work is making a difference in their schools,” said Superintendent León. “They recognize the opportunities before them and the responsibility that comes with those opportunities. Their determination to grow as learners and leaders gives us even more reason to keep raising expectations and expanding what is possible for them.”

During the meeting, students frequently described their school year as exciting, fun, engaging, hopeful, and challenging. Their responses reflected a strong sense of growth, determination, opportunity, and positive momentum, alongside a mature understanding of increased academic expectations and personal responsibility.

Many students highlighted engaging and hands-on learning experiences, new opportunities, supportive environments, and increased accountability. Their reflections demonstrated resilience and an investment in their education, as well as a desire to strengthen their leadership skills and contribute positively to their schools and the district.

“The Superintendent’s Council of Students gives our young people an important opportunity to help shape the school communities they belong to,” said Board of Education President Hasani K. Council. “Their thoughtful feedback and commitment to their education show that they are ready to take an active role in strengthening their schools. We are proud of their leadership and the example they set for their peers.”

The first meeting established an encouraging foundation for continued dialogue throughout the school year, with students expressing both enthusiasm for their experiences and a commitment to meeting the challenges ahead.
