The Arts High School Latin Band participates in celebration of seven Latino cultures in the heart of New York City

NEW YORK CITY – Before thousands of people gathered in the heart of New York City, the Arts High School Latin Band performed at “Latinos in Times Square,” a celebration of the richness, energy, and pride of Hispanic cultures held in one of the world’s most recognizable public spaces at the beginning of Hispanic Heritage Month.

In a half hour set that included Santana’s “Oye Como Va” and Marc Anthony’s “Viver Mi Vida” and “Preciosa,” the student-musicians performed under the direction of Arts High School Band Director Kennis Fairfax. The Arts High School Latin Band Dancers, led by Arts High School Recreational Coordinator and Assistant Band Director Betsy Bermudez Crespo, made their debut and performed as the band played.

“Our Arts High School students brought their talents to an international crossroads, where music connects people across languages and cultures,” said Superintendent León. “Their participation reflects the power of arts education to develop students’ abilities while giving them opportunities to celebrate cultural traditions and share their talents with the world. I commend these young musicians, Mr. Fairfax, and Ms. Crespo for continuing to represent Newark Public Schools with pride.”

“Seeing our students contribute to a celebration of Hispanic culture in Times Square is a source of pride for our entire district,” said Board of Education President Hasani K. Council. “Opportunities like this allow students to share what they have learned, connect with a wider community, and see the impact of their talents beyond the classroom. Congratulations to the Arts High School Latin Band, Mr. Fairfax, and Ms. Crespo on this recognition.”

“Our Latin Band’s participation in Latinos in Times Square gave our students a wonderful opportunity to share their musical talents while celebrating the richness of Latino culture,” said Arts High School Principal Regina Sharpe. “We are proud of the dedication they brought to this performance and grateful to Mr. Fairfax for helping them take their learning beyond the classroom and onto a stage where they could connect with people from around the world.”

The “Latinos in Times Square” was a celebration that brought together Colombia, Puerto Rico, Ecuador, the Dominican Republic, Peru, Venezuela, and Mexico through music, dance, performances, and cultural presentations. Each country’s traditions and identity were highlighted while participants celebrated their connections as one Latino community.

Event representative Michelle Minguez wrote to Fairfax to thank him for his partnership and the band’s participation. Minguez’s letter emphasized the importance of partners in creating opportunities for New Yorkers and visitors from around the world to experience Latino cultures.

“We are especially grateful for your support and collaboration in making Puerto Rico’s representation possible,” Minguez wrote.

Also performing with the band was Miguel Rodriguez Bermudez, the baritone saxophone player who made headlines when Superintendent León offered him a teaching contract on stage at the Arts High School graduation. Bermudez is now at William Paterson University, and well on his way to living his dream.
