Newark Public Schools Scholar-Athlete Earns Full Scholarship To Princeton University

NEWARK, N.J. – Malcolm X Shabazz High School senior Justin Parris, one of New Jersey’s top track and field athletes, has committed to attend Princeton University this fall.

For Parris, the moment he learned of his acceptance quickly became a celebration shared with those closest to him.

“My dad actually found out before I did,” Parris said. “My grandparents were calling me to congratulate me before I even opened the portal. It was a great moment to share with my family.”

A 17-year-old member of the Class of 2026, Parris has distinguished himself both on the track and in the classroom, embodying the qualities of a true scholar-athlete. Known for his strength in the 400-meter race, he was a member of the four-man 400-meter relay team that won the national championship at the 2025 Nike Indoor Nationals. He credits his success to discipline, self-belief, and the support of those around him.

“I always try to remind myself that I’m here for a reason,” he said. “You have to trust yourself, trust your family, and stay focused on what you want to achieve.”

Shabazz Track Coach Hassan Wilson said he recognized Parris’ potential early on.

“I saw Justin competing as a young athlete and immediately knew he had something special,” Wilson said. “What sets him apart is not just his talent, but his mindset. He has the ability to push beyond limits and trust himself when it matters most.”

At Shabazz High School, Parris became part of a high-performing track program supported by a dedicated coaching staff focused on developing the whole student. Coaches emphasized not only physical training, but also mental preparation, accountability, and perseverance.

“That level of support ensures that every student is maximized,” Wilson added.

In the classroom, Parris has taken on a rigorous academic schedule that includes Advanced Placement coursework. Outside of school, he has worked as a youth golf coach, demonstrating leadership and a commitment to giving back. Parris is interested in becoming a dentist. His inspiration comes from his uncle, who is a practicing dentist in Harlem.

Despite his accolades, Parris remains grounded.

“There’s always someone out there working harder,” he said. “That mindset keeps me going.”

His decision to attend Princeton ultimately came down to a personal connection.

“When I visited campus, I just felt it,” Parris said. “I could see myself there—academically and athletically. It felt like where I was meant to be.”

Superintendent León has repeatedly praised Parris for his achievement and the example he sets for others.

Board of Education President Hasani K. Council echoed that sentiment, highlighting the broader impact of Parris’ success.

As he prepares for the next chapter, Parris hopes his story inspires others.

“You can’t do it alone,” he said. “You need to trust yourself but also lean on your family and your faith. If you believe in yourself, anything is possible.”
