Membership continues to rise in facility that has helped district realize fewer job vacancies
NEWARK, N.J. – The Newark Public Schools employees are experiencing the benefits of regular exercise with help from the fitness center.
The employee fitness center offers a variety of cardio equipment, including treadmills, stationary bicycles, rowing machines, and stair-climbing machines. Fitness professionals also lead classes and workshops designed to promote employees’ health and well-being.
Hundreds of the district’s employees are members of the fitness center, representing their prioritization of health and wellness as integral to their overall success at work and beyond.
Superintendent León said the district opened the facility in recognition of the dedication demonstrated by its employees.
“Our staff continues to go above and beyond to serve students and families of Newark Public Schools,” Superintendent León said. “They put in early mornings, late nights, and weekends. Having the Fitness Center gives our employees the opportunity to take care of themselves as they take care of the District’s business.”
Board of Education President Hasani K. Council said the fitness center represents a valuable investment in district employees.
“Our employees are among Newark Public Schools’ most valuable assets, and supporting their health and well-being strengthens the entire District,” President Council said. “The Fitness Center makes it easier for employees to incorporate exercise into their daily routines, reduce stress, and build healthy habits. That is an investment that benefits our employees, our schools, and ultimately our students.”
The fitness center is part of the District’s broader commitment to the NBOE Well initiative, creating a healthy and supportive workplace. By providing employees with convenient access to exercise equipment, professional guidance, and wellness programming, Newark Public Schools is helping staff members prioritize their health while continuing their dedicated service to students and families.
The fitness center has contributed to the district’s historic lows in the vacancies across all titles, increases in staff attendance regardless of location, and improved performance in every department. NBOE Well is the total package, where our self-insured strategy, with the assistance and support of our healthcare partners, are affording every staff member with a health benefits package (that they pay for) to be second to none.
