New Jersey Devils Donate to NPS Visual and Entertainment Arts Program

WHAT: The New Jersey Devils will donate $5,000 to the Newark Public Schools’ Visual and Entertainment Arts Program from the Devils Cares Foundation this holiday season. The NJ Devils group (mascot, dancers, and employees) will go into Visual Arts Teacher Nelson Alvarez’s second grade classroom to deliver an oversized check to the school principal, Darleen Gearhart.

The group will participate in classroom activities. There will be a celebration including dancers, Devils tattoos, balloons, and face painting.

It is the Devils’ Care promise to come back quarterly and interact with the same program by sending guest speakers or helping students with their homework.

Newark Public Schools launched the “Renew the Arts” initiative in September 2013 with support to the Newark Public Schools Innovation Fund from the Geraldine R. Dodge Foundation and The Prudential Foundation. The expressed purpose of this initiative is explore and pilot strategies that ensure all students are receiving a robust, developmentally appropriate, sequential arts education throughout their educational experience at Newark Public Schools. Schools that were selected to participate in this pilot initiative include: Level 1-Brick Peshine Academy, Camden Street School, Louise A. Spencer, Maple Avenue School, South Street School and Sussex Avenue School. The level 2 schools are Arts High School, East Side High School, Ivy Hill School, Newark Bridges, and Rafael Hernandez.
