Malcolm X Shabazz High School Alum Zaiden McDonald Named New Jersey Player of the Year by the Maxwell Football Club

Standout defensive leader adds prestigious statewide honor weeks after signing with Stanford University

Malcolm X Shabazz High School Alum Zaiden McDonaldNEWARK, N.J. – Zaiden McDonald, the Malcolm X Shabazz High School football running back and linebacker who recently committed to Stanford University, has been named New Jersey Player of the Year by the Robert W. Maxwell Football Club. The organization is one of America’s oldest and most esteemed football organizations, recognizing excellence in athletics, leadership, and character.

“Zaiden McDonald is an exceptional person who, as a student athlete has demonstrated exemplary discipline, determination, and character,” said Superintendent León. “I congratulate Zaiden on being recognized by this extraordinary honor. Zaiden has earned every bit of it. We are immeasurably proud of him, and we are looking forward to seeing him thrive at Stanford and beyond.”

Council. “Zaiden’s journey is a powerful reminder of what our students can achieve when talent, hard work, and opportunity come together. We celebrate him, his family, his coaches and teachers, and everyone who supported his rise.”

McDonald’s Player of the Year selection honor is the latest episode in an extraordinary year, which included playing in the NJSIAA Group II State Championship and officially committing to Stanford University to continue his academic and athletic career. The distinction places him among an elite group of high school athletes recognized by the Maxwell Football Club over its 90-year history. His achievement also underscores the growing prominence of Newark athletes across the state and nation.

Being recognized by the Maxwell Football Club is a testament not only to his performance on the field, but to the heart and leadership he brings to our entire community.”

The Maxwell Football Club was founded in 1935 and named Robert W. Maxwell, an early 20th century football player, coach, sports editor, and official. The Maxwell Football Club has become one of the most influential organizations in the sport. The Club recognizes excellence at every level of the sport, from high school to the NFL, with selections based not only on athletic achievement but also on leadership, integrity, and community impact.
