NEWARK, N.J. – Dr. Samantha Lott-Velez, the district’s Assistant Superintendent of Student Support Services, has been appointed co-chairperson of the Superintendents Commission of the New Jersey Alliance of Black School Educators (NJABSE).

NJABSE brings together teachers, administrators, and other education professionals committed to advancing educational opportunities and outcomes for students. The Superintendents Commission provides a forum for school system leaders to collaborate, exchange effective practices and address issues affecting students and school communities.

Dr. Lott-Velez’s appointment recognizes her leadership and experience in supporting students and families throughout Newark Public Schools.

“Dr. Lott-Velez understands that supporting students means looking at the whole child and ensuring that our schools respond to the needs of every student and family,” said Superintendent León. “Her appointment to this statewide leadership role is well deserved. I know that her experience and perspective will be valuable to colleagues throughout New Jersey, just as her leadership continues to be valuable to the students and families of Newark.”

Board of Education President Hasani K. Council said the appointment reflects the caliber of leadership within Newark Public Schools.

“We are proud to see Dr. Lott-Velez recognized with this important appointment,” President Council said. “Newark Public Schools has talented leaders whose knowledge, experience, and expertise can contribute not only to our district, but also to advancing public education across New Jersey and the nation. Dr. Lott-Velez will bring to this commission a strong commitment to students and an understanding of the supports that help them thrive.”

Dr. Lott-Velez said she looks forward to collaborating with school leaders from throughout the state.

“I am honored to serve as co-chairperson of the NJABSE Superintendents Commission and to have the opportunity to work alongside colleagues who share a commitment to strengthening opportunities for students,” Dr. Lott-Velez said. “I look forward to sharing what we have learned in Newark, learning from the experiences of other school systems, and working collectively to identify practices that help all students succeed.”

The appointment also continues Newark Public Schools’ growing presence in professional organizations, commissions, task forces and working groups that help shape conversations about public education in New Jersey and beyond.
