Keith Davis, former NFL player, Rose Bowl champion, and fellow former NFL player Germard Reed visited three Newark high schools to inspire students with powerful messages about dreams, resilience, and overcoming challenges. The visits were organized by the Newark Public Schools Department of Health and Physical Education, YES, you can!, and YES (Youth Equipped to Succeed) Programs were held at American History High School, Arts High School, and West Side High School.

The duo from YES Programs, a non-profit offering research-based wellness education, shared insights on the power of perseverance with students. Some key components of their message were:

  • You’re not born a winner or a loser. You’re born a chooser!
  • PUSH – Persevere Until Success Happens
  • Remember, you could have more if you don’t settle for less
  • Sight sees what is, but Vision sees what’s out there
  • It’s not how you start, it’s how you finish – Second Half!

Students were captivated by the duo’s presentation. The unique blend of Davis and Reed sharing their personal experiences growing up in Los Angeles, coupled with their engaging demonstrations of strength – doing push-ups while carrying students on their backs – created an interactive and memorable experience. Additionally, the opportunity for students to wear their championship rings added to the excitement, making the event a success.

“Be resilient and never stop dreaming. If the first half of your life isn’t exactly how you envisioned, you’ve got to have a good second half in life. That’s what matters most,” said Davis, sharing his personal story of growth and perseverance.

Reed continued the message, also speaking out against the dangers of alcohol, drugs, vaping, and bullying. “You can be anything you want to be, but you have to make the right choices along the way,” Reed said. Both speakers also shared the importance of healthy relationships, emphasizing the value of support systems in overcoming life’s challenges.
