Nearly 100 Newark Public Schools students and their chaperones were at Madison Square Garden on January 31st to see the Brick City’s own Shakur Stevenson become a four-division world champion.
The students were from Quitman Elementary School, Speedway Elementary School, and the Newark School of Fashion & Design. Transportation and tickets to the event were provided by the City of Newark. Food and refreshments were provided by the District.
Stevenson defeated Teofimo Lopez by a unanimous decision to take the WBO super lightweight title. The victory made Stevenson the 25th fighter in boxing history to win championships in four different weight classes.
Stevenson had attended Quitman Elementary School as a child.
