Hawkins Street School reaches completion of a major facilities improvement project that enhances the safety, functionality, and longevity of this cherished building. The extensive roof and masonry restoration project, with a total cost of $2,605,922.07, began on June 27, 2023, and reached completion on September 27, 2024. The project focused on comprehensive roof repairs and targeted masonry restoration to ensure the school remains secure and in excellent condition for years to come.

The roof repairs at Hawkins Street School involved the removal of all existing materials, including membranes, shingles, and insulation, down to the roof deck. The new roofing system features an asphalt fiberglass shingle design, incorporating underlayment, metal flashings, ridge protection, and snow guards, ensuring both durability and weather resistance. Additionally, a modern cold-applied SBS modified bituminous membrane roof system was installed, complete with a vapor barrier and advanced drainage solutions. These enhancements are backed by extensive manufacturer warranties, offering peace of mind and long-term reliability.

Masonry restoration focused on repairing and preserving the building’s structural integrity. Key elements included replacing damaged steel lintels, cleaning and repointing brickwork, sealing coping stones, and restoring limestone trims. Advanced materials like liquid flashing and perimeter sealants were applied to protect against the elements and extend the lifespan of the masonry.
This project underscores the District’s dedication to maintaining high-quality facilities that support the educational experience.
