NTA

The Newark Teachers' Association (NTA) applied for incorporation on November 30, 1935, under the leadership of President Ephraim Eisenberg and was officially incorporated by the State of New Jersey on February 3, 1936.

According to its Certificate of Incorporation, the Association was established to support efforts that strengthen Newark Public Schools and promote the professional and general welfare of educators. Its first office was located at 40 Rector Street in Newark. The NTA negotiated its first collective bargaining agreement with the Newark Board of Education in 1965. In collaboration with the New Jersey Education Association (NJEA), the Association also supported legislation to establish salary parity between school nurses and teachers. In 1973, the NTA negotiated its first collective bargaining agreement for public school nurses.

Although the state NTA is comprised of both teachers and registered nurses, over the years the Newark Board of Education NTA’s representation has evolved over time.  Today, it serves as the exclusive representative for Newark Public Schools' Registered Nurses (RN’s).

Through its affiliations with the New Jersey Education Association (NJEA) and the National Education Association (NEA), the NTA continues to support professional advocacy, member education, and professional development on issues affecting public education, school health services, students, and the communities they serve.

The Newark Board of Education NTA recognizes the essential role school nurses play in supporting the health, safety, and well-being of more than 39,000 students each year. Their clinical expertise, advocacy, and commitment help create safe learning environments and support student success across the district. While the association acknowledges and appreciates the contributions of all its’ members, we especially want to thank our school nurses for their ongoing service to students, families, and the school community.
