NBOE Celebrates the National Girls & Women in Sports Day

Newark Board of Education 2024 National Girls & Women in Sports Honorees
Newark Board of Education 2024 National Girls & Women in Sports Honorees
The National Girls and Women in Sports Day observed annually during the first week of February, serves as a significant moment to celebrate the achievements of female athletes. It provides an opportunity to recognize the positive impact of sports participation for women and girls while acknowledging the ongoing efforts for equality in women's sports. On February 8th, the Office of Health, Physical Education, and Athletics marked this occasion by honoring female student-athletes, coaches, administrators, and alumnae at the District's 2nd Annual NBOE National Girls and Women in Sports Day ceremony, hosted at Weequahic High School. Annette Williams, a distinguished figure and retired Director of Health, PE & Athletics at Newark Public Schools, coach, and Malcolm X Shabazz alumna, delivered an inspiring keynote address.

This day is set aside annually to recognize the progress made by women and girls in the world of sports and encourage more girls and young women to get active and participate in sports. NBOE ensures that girls have the same opportunities and equal access as their male and suburban counterparts.

Women in sports are powerful role models for young girls, inspiring them to believe anything is achievable with dedication and hard work. Female athletes showcase to young girls everywhere that there are no boundaries to what they can accomplish, and this understanding is priceless in a society where women are frequently marginalized and underrepresented. Among the individuals recognized were the recipients of the NJSIAA National Girls and Women in Sports awards.
