Newark Board of Education Celebrates Successful Video Premiere of “The Other Side of Newark” at Central High School

On Tuesday, June 13th, at Central High School in Newark, New Jersey, Jerry Wanda, 3-time Grammy award-winning producer, The City of Newark and the Newark Board of Education, held a successful video premiere of "The Other Side of Newark." The event was attended by many notable people, such as Mayor Ras J. Baraka, members of Brick City Peace Collective, Executive Staff and Board Members of NBOE, and Mariano Rivera, Hall of Fame pitcher for the Yankees.

"The Other Side of Newark" is an album exploring the city's powerful anti-violence, peace-building, and unity themes. The album features talented artists, including spoken word poetry by Mayor Ras J. Baraka, Councilman Dupré "Doitall" Kelly from West Ward, and rappers from various wards in Newark. The celebration's highlight was the premiere of ten visually stunning music videos, all recorded on location at Newark Public Schools, featuring students and staff. This special occasion aimed to honor and recognize the outstanding achievements and impact of the arts on over 2,000 students.

The Newark Board of Education is pleased to be a supportive partner in the innovative program, which aligns with the vision of Mayor Ras J. Baraka and Producer Jerry Wonda. This program has positively impacted students' lives by providing them with music and arts opportunities, which boosts their confidence and prepares them for success beyond high school.

The success of "The Other Side of Newark" video premiere was celebrated by Superintendent León. He expressed his joy at the overwhelming response from over 600 students at Central High School, who were thrilled to see themselves and their classmates on the big screen.

Assistant Superintendent Dr. Maria Ortiz added, "This remarkable evening demonstrated our students' incredible talent and potential. The arts can change lives, and 'The Other Side of Newark' has provided a platform for our students to express themselves and inspire others. We are immensely proud of their accomplishments."
