Malcolm X Shabazz High School Robotics Team Wins First-Ever Regional Championship

NEWARK, N.J. – The Malcolm X Shabazz High School Robotics Team has made history, by capturing its first-ever championship title at the FIRST Mid-Atlantic Region Mount Olive Event this past weekend.

The victory marks a major milestone for the 13-member team, known as the “Bulldog Bots,” now in its fifth season competing in the FIRST Robotics Competition. Under the leadership of Coach Nicholas Ferriero, who has guided the team for the past four years, the program has grown into a dynamic and resilient force.

“This historic win is a powerful example of what happens when Newark students are given the opportunity to explore, innovate, and work together toward a common goal,” said Superintendent León. “These students have demonstrated technical excellence, perseverance, collaboration, and the kind of determination that defines success in the 21st century.”

The team’s strength lies not only in its engineering skill, but in its diversity. Composed of students in grades 10 through, the Bulldog Bots exemplify how collaboration and shared purpose can yield outcomes

“The Bulldog Bots’ dedication, teamwork, and commitment to excellence make our entire district proud,” said Board of Education President Hasani K. Council. “This championship is well-earned, and we look forward to cheering them on as they continue their journey.”

Students devoted countless hours throughout the season to designing, building, and refining their robot. They often worked late into the evening, sometimes past 9 p.m. on weekdays. Their commitment and teamwork proved instrumental in securing the championship.

“This victory represents the heart of Malcolm X Shabazz High School,” said Principal Dr. Atiba Buckman. “Our students embraced the challenge, put in the work, and supported one another every step of the way. They have shown that excellence is not defined by circumstances, but by commitment, resilience, and belief in what is possible. We are incredibly proud of the Bulldog Bots and excited to see them continue to shine on the next stage.”

The team’s success was further strengthened by the support of Malcolm X Shabazz High School Science Teacher Joshua Tunnermann and volunteer FIRST Robotics mentor John Bottenberg, whose guidance helped elevate the team’s performance.

With their Mount Olive victory, the Bulldog Bots have earned a spot in the FIRST Mid-Atlantic District Championship, which will take place from April 15th through April 18th at Lehigh University’s Stabler Arena in Bethlehem, Pennsylvania.
