Superintendent León Congratulates Statewide Historic All-District Sectional Basketball Championship Games

NEWARK, N.J. – The Newark Public Schools proudly released the following statements congratulating the Arts High School and University High School Girls Basketball Teams and the Malcolm X Shabazz and Arts High School Boys Basketball Teams on making history by achieving the All-Newark Public Schools Sectional Basketball Championship games.

In 2020, the district implemented a historic 10-year strategic plan titled The Next Decade: 2020–30. Throughout all of the years since it began, we have witnessed historic and first-time-ever events that have contributed to the transformation of the district. This has occurred in and out of the classroom.

One historic event just occurred on Saturday. For the first time in New Jersey history, Newark Public Schools is the only school district that has closed out an entire sectional basketball championship. We would like to congratulate the student-athletes from the Girls Basketball teams at Arts High School and University High School and the Boys Basketball teams at Arts High School and Malcolm X Shabazz High School who were in the NJSIAA North 2, Group 1 Sectional championship games on Saturday.

“I keep repeating it over and over again, when one of our schools competes against another one of our schools in a championship, Newark always wins,” said Superintendent León. “I want to recognize our dynamic coaches and parents across all four schools, and everyone who supported these incredible student-athletes.”

“This extraordinary moment in Newark Public Schools athletics reflects the determination, discipline, and pride of our student-athletes and their coaches,” said Board President Council. “To have four Newark schools competing in sectional championship games – including matchups between Newark Public Schools teams – is a historic achievement that speaks volumes about the strength of our athletic programs and the talent of our young people.”

These teams represent the very best of Newark. They demonstrate teamwork, perseverance, and a commitment to excellence that mirrors the values we work to instill in every classroom across the district.

We wish the Arts High School Girls and the Malcolm X Shabazz High School Boys basketball teams best wishes as they head into tomorrow’s semifinal games.
