Dedication, discipline, sacrifice and achievement are each key elements of Principal Thomas and his professional journey over the past two decades. This proud educator has devoted his life to the universal growth and development of young minds throughout the city of Newark and abroad in many different realms.
For the past 6 years Mr. Thomas has served the community as the Principal of both George Washington Carver Elementary School and Bruce Street School for the Deaf to provide a warm and safe learning environment for all students regardless of circumstance or adversity. Cultural awareness, knowledge of self, pride and tradition are inclusive of the school’s core values and vison of “P.E.A.C.E” which means Proper Education Always Corrects Errors. With this mindset and leadership, Principal Thomas and his excellent team of educators, parents and community members have been able to increase enrollment, raise attendance, improve academic growth performance, and enhance the overall social and emotional awareness throughout the school.
Principal Thomas began his public school educational career with the Newark Board of Education 19 years ago at Camden Middle School as an 8 th grade language arts literacy teacher. During his time in the classroom he guided students to significant levels of academic proficiency before becoming the school’s ELA Instructional Coach in which he was able to continue to have a positive impact on student achievement school-wide. In 2010, Mr. Thomas was promoted to Vice Principal at Central High School where he worked collectively with a group of talented school leaders, teachers and staff to significantly improve the school’s overall academic performance and social achievement across the curriculum. It was his dedicated time, patience, mentorship, stern love and understanding which gave him the opportunity to create strong relationships with the entire school community to significantly contribute to its warm culture and climate.
At the age of 18 years-old Principal Thomas obtained “knowledge of self.” He formally embraced strong cultural teachings, bestowed his self with the name “G. Khalik” and began to sincerely live his life upon the principles of knowledge, wisdom and understanding. Aside from his efforts in public education he works extremely close with several community-based organizations and special programs here in Newark its surrounding communities specifically designed to support, mentor and redirect disengaged youth across the spectrum through various forms of creative intervention and prevention. Mr. Thomas is a father of 3 sons and he is also a very proud HBCU graduate of Delaware State University and St. Peter’s University.
