District Releases Video Promoting Student Voter Registration

District Releases Video Promoting Student Voter Registration

Students who will be 16 or older on April 15 can register through March 25

NEWARK, N.J. – As the Newark Board of Education approaches its first election in which the voting age is 16, Newark Public Schools officials today released a video promoting student voter registration.

“This is the first time Newark students can have a voice in the decisions that affect us the most,” says Zuri McCune, the student representative to the Board of Education in the 40-second spot. “Don’t miss this chance. Let your voice be heard.”

The video, which was written and produced by the District’s Communications Department, has been uploaded to the District’s website and Facebook, Instagram, and LinkedIn accounts. More information about student voter registration is available at the following link:

https://www.nps.k12.nj.us/events/vote-16-registration-deadline/

“I encourage everyone in Newark Public Schools to watch and share this video to help make sure that eligible students register by March 25th,” said Superintendent León. “Never before have high school students in New Jersey had the chance to participate in their local democracy like what’s happening in Newark this year.. It is my hope that all eligible students will register and cast their ballots in the upcoming school board election as a start to a lifelong commitment to voting.”

“This is a historic moment for Newark’s students,” said Board of Education President Hasani K. Council. “I strongly encourage every eligible student to take advantage of this opportunity, register by March 25th, and show up to vote. Our young people have powerful voices, and this election is their chance to make them count.”

Newark Student Wins 5th Place at Catholic Forensic League National Championship Tournament

Over Memorial Day weekend, talented students from Newark made a significant impact at the National Catholic Forensic Language (NCFL) Grand National Tournament. Samuel Thomas, twelfth-grade student, from Central High School celebrated a historic fifth-place national finish. Coached by Dennis K. Philbert, Central High School continued its record-setting tradition. Samuel Thomas is the second Newark Public School student to make it to the finals of this national competition and the first to advance to the Dramatic Performance final.

Joining Thomas on this victorious experience was his fellow teammate, Deborah Edohwokui, also coached by Mr. Philbert, who placed 23rd in the nation as a quarterfinalist in Oral Interpretation. At the same time, the Newark School of Fashion & Design marked its debut at the tournament with Edwin Granados, coached by David Richardson, who finished among the top 48 Octofinalists in Dramatic Performance. Meanwhile, Mitchel Elusanmi, a Barringer High School student, participated under coach Michael Sowell's guidance, further broadening the Newark representation at the tournament.

Other dedicated participants from Central High School included Micah Acolatse, Ayomide Adekoya, and Mary Nabulya, all nurtured under the coaching expertise of Mr. Philbert. This achievement marks a proud moment for Newark Public Schools and is a testament to the partnership with the Newark Debate Academy. Their joint efforts continue to foster an environment that champions academic excellence, instilling in students the skills to reach their potential.

Chef Hassan has been working tirelessly to develop an amazing learning environment in the farm room! Along with Ms. Haynes, Chef Hassan assisted in making pizzas topped with fresh greens from the harvest! Ms. Davis from I Have a Dream Foundation has taken specific care that the plants stay fed with vital nutrients. On Monday, March 28th, due to a suspected power failure, they had lost a harvest due to the pump shutting off sometime over the weekend. However, through hard work, the farm has been growing beautiful greens and beautiful inquiring minds!

George Washington Carver/Bruce Street Elementary School

GW Carver and Bruce Street Schools have not stopped working hard to learn best practices to develop great systems with their students. Ms. Bello and Ms. Landskroner have been training their students well. Even though there was some inconsistent growth at the last harvest, they have built a clean the farm and have been taught how to spot clogged nozzles. During the most recent harvest, several students helped to change out nozzles for more even watering.

AeroFarms Team inspecting the installation of vertical farms in Central High School

AeroFarms is an award winning company that aims to solve many of today’s most pressing agricultural needs by building vertical aeroponic farms in sustainable models across communities. On November 9th, 2022, AeroFarms Chief of Staff and Director of Community Farms Jason Ginsberg arrived with his team to inspect the installation of the two farms located in Central High School’s greenhouse, as well as the units housed in George Washington Carver, Sir Isaac Newton, and Michelle Obama Elementary Schools.

According to Director Ginsberg, each farm uses standard electrical inputs and is capable of producing up to 550 pounds of fresh produce annually. In partnership with Central High School’s Environmental Studies Academy, students will soon be able to select among a variety of seeds to plant and harvest. Students can select from baby greens, such as baby kale, watercress, and bok choyto micro greens, such as micro arugula, broccoli, and kale—which can be harvested in just two weeks of planting.

The first priority of the harvests is to provide students with healthy servings of vegetables to take home, produce that replicates farm to table models without any use of chemical pesticides or other harmful inputs used in commercial farming. Other priorities include the educational component of sustainable farming and how modern technologies can improve age-old practices. We look forward to AeroFarms’ partnership growing and providing Central High School’s students with the knowledge, skills, and opportunities to be forward, creative thinkers ready to solve our world’s most pressing needs.
