Ms. Terri V. Mitchell, Principal

Terri Mitchell is entering her 22nd year as a dedicated educator with the Newark Board of Education. She earned her Bachelor of Arts in Mathematics at New Jersey City University and Master of Arts in Administration & Supervision at Saint Peter’s College.
Following her mother’s footsteps, Ms. Mitchell discovered her passion for education and taught high school mathematics at Central High School and Newark Evening High School. She returned to New Jersey City University to earn her 2nd Master of Arts in Mathematics Education in 2004.
After teaching for five years, Ms. Mitchell was promoted to Mathematics Department Chairperson at Central High School, where she shifted the focus of the academic mathematics program from remediation to college readiness. She led teachers in the implementation of advanced placement curricula and instructional practices that resulted in exceptional student achievement and teaching.
In 2010, Ms. Mitchell was promoted to Vice Principal at Central High School. She worked collectively with the school counselors to ensure all students graduated from high school college and career ready. In addition, she is a master scheduler who created student-centered schedules that support and elevate the school and district curricula, instructional objectives, and goals.
Ms. Mitchell serves as a board member for Newark GALS (Girls Acquiring Life Skills) and is also a member of the National Association of Secondary School Principals (NASSP). Ms. Mitchell believes through role modeling and mentoring, students are empowered and cultivated in becoming the next generation of leaders the world needs to bring about change.
Principal Mitchell’s goal is to transform the teaching and learning environment by norming pedagogical approaches that further enhance students’ abilities to effectively communicate, collaborate, think critically, problem-solve, and engage in self-directed learning that makes them more likely to thrive in college, career, civic, and political life.
Dear Parents/Guardians,
Welcome CHS stakeholders to the 2020-2021 school year at Central High School! I hope and pray this letter finds you and your family in good health. I want to thank you for choosing to educate your child at Central. I am appreciative of the wonderful collaboration and diligence all stakeholders have done in supporting the success of our students. Last year, we worked together and got through a crisis. This global pandemic has forced us to think and operate differently, creatively and communicate in new ways. Most of all, it has brought all of us closer as a school community. I am so proud of the collaboration, hard work, and dedication that has been exhibited by all of you last year, and I anticipate even greater gains this year.
On behalf of the staff, we are extremely excited to begin the process of restoring stability for our students. I know together we will ensure both remote and in-person learning models for the children yield high quality instruction and promote success for all students. Our staff is looking forward to a year filled with a variety of learning experiences and new beginnings. In order to protect the health and safety of all stakeholders and to promote maximum success, we need your support now more than ever to ensure the CDC, NJ state and Newark district guidelines are followed as we designed the school reopening plans.
