District Partners With NJ LEEP Expanding Students’ Access To College

Program to be funded by MacKenzie Scott’s Yield Giving Foundation grant

NEWARK, N.J. – In March, philanthropist MacKenzie Scott made the stunning announcement that her Yield Giving Foundation was giving $8 million to New Jersey nonprofits. Twenty-five percent of the funding was awarded to NJ LEEP, a leading nonprofit that works with first-generation and low-income students, building their skills and providing experiences to help them achieve their college and career aspirations.

Today, at a news conference at Central High School, officials from Newark Public Schools (NPS) and NJ LEEP announced that a portion of the funding would go to a pilot program that would enable the nonprofit to expand its programming beginning with students at Central and East Side High Schools.

“It takes a village to set students up for success, and Newark Public Schools’ formal partnership with NJ LEEP highlights an exciting and incredible new chapter—both for our education system and ongoing efforts to closing existing gaps in educational attainment,” said Superintendent León. “We’re beyond proud to announce the launch of our formal partnership and expand additional opportunities for our students to engage with the curriculum in meaningful ways, diversify experiences for growth and learning, and support their paths to higher achievement.”

“Since NJ LEEP was established in 2007, we have strived to expand access to educational opportunities so that Newark students are equipped with the confidence, skills, and experiences needed to pursue their higher education and career goals,” said NJ LEEP Executive Director Matthew Feinstein. “With this generous jumpstart from the Yield Giving Foundation, we are thrilled to formalize our partnership with Newark Public Schools and soon launch our school-based pilot program. Looking ahead, we aspire to continue building on this momentum to serve as a partner to Newark Public Schools in ensuring that all students have the support and resources to determine their own futures and achieve their dreams.”

Within the organization’s current scope of programming, NJ LEEP partners with over 375 students from middle school through college, offering a range of support from SAT/ACT test prep, opportunities to develop social-emotional skills, and internships; to field trips and volunteer experiences, among much more. To date, among NJ LEEP students, 100 percent graduate high school, and 99 percent enroll in college. Of those who enroll in college, 74 percent complete their degree.

With this seed funding, NJ LEEP is beginning to implement their strategic plan to expand programming to include school-based partnerships to ensure even more students across the greater Newark area have the opportunities and skills needed to succeed in college. As part of the partnership’s school-based pilot program, NJ LEEP will hire existing NPS teachers or counselors who are deeply familiar with student needs, their schools and community culture, and participating students will take part in programming at their respective schools.

“As New Jersey’s public education system continues to adapt to a new normal post-pandemic, and effect changes and improvements to better support all students, partnerships like the one between Newark Public Schools and NJ LEEP are critical in impacting positive change,” said New Jersey State Senate Majority Leader M. Teresa Ruiz, who participated in today’s news conference. “Every student deserves access to high-quality education, the ability to learn and thrive in supportive classroom environments, and the resources to pursue and gain skills integral to succeeding in college. Building on existing momentum toward these goals, I am thrilled to support the NPS-NJ LEEP partnership and look forward to all that will be accomplished in the years ahead.”

“As both a former Newark Public Schools teacher and principal, I am acutely aware of the challenges our students face in gaining college educations, and the career advantages they grant,” Newark Mayor Ras J. Baraka said. “We want all of Newark’s students to experience the fullness of an enriched academic journey that leads them easily into the college of their choice and onto their most rewarding career. This pilot program offers just that – and I speak for the entire city when I thank MacKenzie Scott, the Yield Giving Foundation, and NJ LEEP for this most generous gift and for their efforts that will uplift all of Newark for generations to come.”

Newark Public Schools Showcase Inaugural High School Thesis Project

The Newark Board of Education proudly announces the inaugural High School Senior Thesis Project that represents a groundbreaking initiative aimed at elevating scholarly inquiry and intellectual exploration among graduating seniors. This initiative offers students a unique opportunity to engage in independent research, critical analysis, and academic writing, mirroring the rigors of collegiate-level study within a high school setting. Breaking away from traditional academic conventions, the Senior Thesis Project empowers students to delve deeply into a subject of their choice, honing their research skills, analytical capabilities, and presentation abilities.

Through guided mentorship and structured support, students navigate the complexities of a research project, from formulating a research question to synthesizing findings into a coherent thesis document. As participants in this pioneering endeavor, Seniors not only demonstrated their academic abilities and intellectual curiosity but also set a precedent for future graduating classes to embrace the mindset of scholarly exploration and academic rigor.

On May 31, 2024, the Office of English Language Arts hosted the District’s first Senior Thesis Day event where each high school selected a senior representative to defend their Senior Thesis, demonstrating the intellectual curiosity, the academic rigor, and the spirit of inquiry that define students of Newark Public Schools.

Two students emerged as winners from the competition, with Eva Khan of Central High School recognized for Best Research Analysis and Thesis Development and Olivia Dias Barbas of East Side for Best Oral Presentation. The event was a testament to the exemplary scholarship and dedication of the students, as well as the support and mentorship provided by Newark Public School educators.

The panel of judges commended the students for their innovative research, critical thinking skills, and articulate presentations. The winners exemplified academic excellence and demonstrated the ability to engage with complex topics with clarity and depth.

Superintendent León said, “This milestone signifies the intellectual growth and academic excellence of Newark students! We are proud of the Seniors who have demonstrated commendable dedication and innovation in their chosen topics, reflecting their true passions.  We look forward to witnessing their impact on this world.”

By integrating research-based assignments, project-based learning activities, and writing workshops into existing grades 9-11 coursework, educators will equip students with the tools and expertise necessary to undertake sophisticated research projects culminating in their Senior Thesis in grade 12. This forward-thinking initiative underscores the commitment to provide students with a seamless pathway towards academic success.

Newark Public Schools Proudly Announce All Comprehensive High Schools Earn Middle States Accreditation

Newark, NJ -  Newark Public Schools celebrates six comprehensive high schools that have earned the prestigious designation of Middle States Accreditation under the visionary leadership of Superintendent Roger Leὀn.

Middle States Accreditation is the hallmark of excellence in education - a voluntary, professional peer review process dedicated to enhancing schools, renowned as the gold standard for measuring and propelling school improvement.

It is an external objective validation of school quality and student achievement that fosters continuous school improvement.  Accreditation helps the entire school community think about the future they want and how to get there.  Earning accreditation shows that a school is committed to doing everything it can to support its students.

Accreditation offers many benefits: it serves as a cornerstone of public accountability, affirming the integrity of each school's programs, it fosters deeper involvement and commitment from stakeholders through increased participation opportunities, it serves as a compass, guiding the future trajectory of the school, and it provides various stakeholder groups with a platform to collectively shape, and envision a promising future.

The value of accreditation is that it organizes and creates a culture for sustainable continuous school improvement, it provides direction for those ongoing improvements while increasing accountability for student performance and organizational capacity.  Each school has forged a collective commitment to collaborate and transform education for the betterment of the students.

“Barringer, Central, East Side, Malcolm X Shabazz, Weequahic, and West Side High Schools have unequivocally showcased their dedication to enhancing the quality of educational experiences for their students. They have proven their commitment to fulfilling their responsibilities to both the public and the profession,” said Superintendent León.

Board President Council stated, “By meeting the rigorous standards for accreditation set forth by the Middle States Association of Colleges and Schools, these six comprehensive high schools have underscored their excellence and unwavering commitment to best practices in education”.

Newark Public Schools proudly celebrates the remarkable achievement of Barringer, Central, East Side, Malcolm X Shabazz, Weequahic, and West Side High Schools in earning Middle States Accreditation. The attainment of accreditation positions students for a future filled with promise and possibility. And, through collaboration and a focus on student success, these schools are shaping a brighter tomorrow for Newark's youth.
