 SPORTS

Girls and Boys Basketball Team

Coaches: Mr. Holmes (Boys)

                Ms. Fernandes (Girls)

Basketball is a teaching model that provides students with opportunities to collaborate while embracing the role of friendly competition.  By welcoming competition at a level in line with their abilities, students begin to embrace the necessity of discipline and etiquette in the process of becoming their best selves.  Additional skills that are reinforced to our scholars via basketball are:

  • Manipulative Skills
  • Motor Skills
  • Personal Challenges
  • Social Interaction

Soccer Team

Coach: Ms. Gashi

As part of the soccer team our students are provided a learning experience on how to foster character development, as well as discipline, perseverance and resilience.  The objective is to provide our scholars with:

  • Healthy competition that focuses on personal development and team spirit
  • A positive and healthy recreational outlet
  • Incentives to increase their level of concern for academic achievement

Tutoring

  • Math & ELA- Extra assistance with Math and ELA Curriculums that are taught throughout the school year for those students who are working below ability.
  • Saturday Academy- Saturday School is from 8:30AM to 12:30PM, for those students who are in need of extra help in Math, ELA, and ELL.  Students are provided with Breakfast and lunch.

Excel Program- Louise A. Spencer Excel Program begins on September 8, 2026.  The Excel program begins immediately after school dismissal at 3:05pm and ends at 5:30pm. Students are provided with a meal followed by their Excel homeroom teachers escorting the students back to class to continue their curriculum in Math and ELA.

Summer Achieve - students who had low test scores or low attendance 8:30AM-12:30PM

Extended School Year (ESY)- for the students in the AUT and MD Program 8:30AM-12:30PM

English Plus- for English Language Learning Students 8:30AM-12:30PM

QUEST Program- extracurricular activities' (Yoga, Chess, Drama, Legos, etc.) 12:30PM-6:00PM

Clubs

Garden Club- Students exchange gardening tips, plant seeds, vegetables, cut weeds and cover topics like pruning, pest control, and native plants.

Honor Society- Celebrates our students who work hard, do their best, and show kindness, leadership, and good character.  Students may be invited due to a high grade point average (GPA), positive behavior, and willingness to help others.  Being part of Honor Society helps our students to keep learning, serving the community, and encouraging other students.

Robotics- Our students use building kits and simple coding to create robots that can move, complete challenges, or solve problems.  The students work together to design, build, test, and improve their robots while learning about Science, Technology, Engineering and Math (STEM) in a fun and creative way.

Debate- Two groups of students talk about a topic and share different opinions.  One group explains why they agree, and the other group of students explains why they disagree.  Everyone takes turns speaking, listen respectfully, and use reasons and examples to support their answers.  We teach our students that the goal is not to win- it's to learn how to think carefully, speak clearly, and respect different points of view as it will be a way of life as they become adults.

Academic Interventions-

Ms. Palma & Ms. Nicholson (Academic Interventionist) provide:

  • Small-group or one-on one instruction in Reading, Writing, and/or Math targeted to support students who need extra assistance.
  • Use assessment data to identify the students needs and monitor their progress
  • Develope and implement intervention plans tailored to individual students
  • Collaborating with classroom Teachers, Special Education Staff, and Administrators to coordinate support.
