Social & Emotional Learning (SEL)
At South Seventeenth Street School, we believe that student success goes beyond academics. Social and Emotional Learning (SEL) helps our students develop the skills they need to understand themselves, build positive relationships, make responsible choices, and become confident members of their school and community.

Our Beaver community encourages students to:
❤️ Be Kind — Treat others with kindness and respect.
🤝 Be Respectful — Value yourself, others, and our school community.
💪 Be Resilient — Keep trying when things become challenging.
🧠 Be Responsible — Think before you act and make positive choices.
🌟 Be Your Best — Set goals, believe in yourself, and continue to grow.
🏠 Families Are Our Partners
Families play an important role in developing strong social-emotional skills. Parents and caregivers can support SEL at home by talking with children about their feelings, practicing problem-solving, encouraging positive communication, establishing routines, and celebrating effort and growth.
Together, we are building strong minds, kind hearts, and successful Beavers!
🌟 Our SEL Focus
Through classroom lessons, schoolwide activities, conversations, and daily interactions, students have opportunities to strengthen five important areas:
Self-Awareness
Recognizing emotions, strengths, challenges, and personal goals.
Self-Management
Managing emotions and behaviors, handling stress, staying focused, and working toward goals.
Social Awareness
Showing empathy, respecting differences, and understanding the feelings and perspectives of others.
Relationship Skills
Communicating effectively, working cooperatively, resolving conflicts, and developing healthy relationships.
Responsible Decision-Making
Making safe, respectful, thoughtful, and responsible choices at school and in the community.
