Newark Public Schools Student Athletes Make History with Meet of Champions 4×800-Meter Relay Title
Malcolm X Shabazz High School’s Boys Relay Team wins state championship

NEWARK, N.J. – Malcolm X Shabazz High School’s boys track and field team made history capturing the 4x800-meter relay championship at the NJSIAA Meet of Champions and becoming the first Newark high school team to win the event, according to NJSIAA officials.
The quartet of Justin Parris (who committed to Princeton University earlier this year), sophomore Anderson Quarless, Khalid Raheem (who has committed to Rowan University), David Edokpolor (who has committed to St. Peter’s University) crossed the finish line in 7:46.06 at Pennsauken High School, defeating New Jersey’s most accomplished distance-running programs and securing one of the most prestigious titles in high school track and field.
The victory came despite a challenging start to the day, according to a report on NJ.COM. After an hour-and-a-half bus ride, the team arrived with little time to warm up before competing in the day’s opening event. Undeterred, the Bulldogs relied on experience, preparation, and trust in one another to deliver a championship performance.
After remaining close to the leaders through the first half of the race, Shabazz surged ahead during the third leg and never looked back, finishing more than three seconds ahead of runner-up Woodstown High School.
The championship adds another milestone to what has already been a remarkable season for Malcolm X Shabazz High School’s track and field program, which has earned county, conference, sectional, and national recognition throughout the year.
“This championship was the result of trust, preparation, and the culture our athletes have built over time,” said Head Track Coach Hassan N. Wilson. “We didn’t have the ideal circumstances coming into the race, but our young men never made excuses. They trusted their training, trusted one another, and competed with confidence against some of the best programs in New Jersey. What makes me most proud is not just the victory, but the way they represented Malcolm X Shabazz High School, Newark Public Schools, and the City of Newark. They made history because they believed they belonged on that stage.”
“This achievement represents the very best of what our student-athletes can accomplish through discipline, perseverance, and teamwork,” said Superintendent León. “Khalid, David, Justin, and Anderson competed against the finest runners in New Jersey and delivered a historic victory for Malcolm X Shabazz High School, Newark Public Schools, and our entire city. We could not be prouder of them and their coaches.”
Board of Education President Hasani K. Council said the victory reflects the culture of excellence that continues to flourish throughout the district.
“These young men have earned their place in Newark athletic history,” Council said. “To become the first Newark high school team to win the Meet of Champions 4x800-meter relay is an extraordinary accomplishment. Their success reflects countless hours of hard work, the support of their coaches and families, and the determination that defines Malcolm X Shabazz High School.”
Principal Dr. Atiba Buckman praised the athletes for their commitment and resilience.
“Our students demonstrated what it means to rise to the occasion,” Dr. Buckman said. “Even with limited preparation time before the race, they remained focused, trusted their training, and competed with confidence. This championship is the result of their dedication and the outstanding leadership provided by Coach Hassan Wilson and the entire coaching staff. We are incredibly proud of what they have accomplished.”
The Meet of Champions brings together the top athletes from across New Jersey and represents the highest level of competition in the state's high school track and field season. By winning the 4x800 relay championship, the Bulldogs have secured a place in the record books while further cementing Malcolm X Shabazz High School's reputation as one of New Jersey's premier track and field programs.
The Malcolm X Shabazz High School Track Team will compete in the Adidas National Track Tournament in Greensboro, N.C., which begins on June 18th.
