McDonald becomes the second Shabazz Bulldog in two years to join Stanford Football
NEWARK, N.J. – Newark Public Schools and Malcolm X Shabazz High School (MXS) celebrated a major milestone as senior running back and linebacker Zaiden McDonald formally announced his commitment to play Division I football at Stanford University.
During a special signing ceremony held in the school library, McDonald spoke with heartfelt gratitude as he thanked everyone who supported him throughout his journey as a student-athlete – including his teammates, coaches, teachers, principal, athletic director, and family.
And when he acknowledged his mother and father’s support, McDonald couldn’t hold back his tears.
“You put your time and your love into me. It means a lot to me,” he said.
“I am immensely proud of my son,” said McDonald’s mother, Shadirah Richardson. “He has worked tirelessly. He was so focused, so determined, so driven. I kind of saw this happening because of his dedication.”
“I know he’s going to do his best,” said Quintine Richardson, McDonald’s father. “That’s all he’s been doing since he was a kid.”
And then, McDonald was on to the business at hand. “I feel like I’m ready to sign with Stanford University,” said McDonald, just before putting his signature on the National Letter of Intent, the culmination of many years of hard work.
Superintendent León praised McDonald’s achievement.
“Zaiden embodies the best of what we strive for in Newark Public Schools student-athletes, academic commitment, athletic excellence, and strong character,” said Superintendent León. “His journey to one of the nation’s most prestigious universities reminds all of our students that their talent, hard work, and determination can open doors to extraordinary opportunities.”
Board of Education President Hasani K. Council praised McDonald’s achievement as a milestone for the school and city. “Zaiden’s success is Newark’s success,” said Council. “He represents the brilliance, resilience, and potential of our students. We are incredibly proud of him and look forward to seeing what he accomplishes next.”
McDonald is the second Shabazz Bulldog in two years to commit to the Stanford Cardinal, following Omari Gaines, who signed with the program last year. Gaines’ father, Nasir Gaines, now serves as the Bulldogs’ Head Football Coach and guided this year’s team to a remarkable winning season that ended with the team’s third consecutive appearance in the Group 2 state championship game.
“I have the privilege of knowing him since he was five years old,” Coach Gaines said, recalling McDonald’s days playing in the Brick City Lions youth football program. “I’m so proud of you coming to Shabazz and helping to change the culture, changing the narrative. It’s proven that we can make it, you’ll be somebody that go on far and do great things in life.”
MXS Athletic Director Noel Colon said McDonald embodies the school’s values.
“His commitment to excellence extends beyond the classrooms and the field,” Colon said.
MXS Principal Dr. Atiba Buckman remembered McDonald as a “super shy” student when they first met, showing little sign that he, out of eight million high school student athletes, would be the one of the few to earn a full scholarship to play football at one of the nation’s elite universities.
“When I asked you something you would just smile,” Dr. Buckman said. “Now you stand strong and shake people’s hands. You are a model for all of our students.”
Senatorial Congratulations For McDonald
U.S. Senator Cory Booker, former Newark mayor and a Stanford alumnus who played on the university’s football team, sent McDonald his congratulations through a video-recorded message.
“Stanford, for me, opened up a world of possibilities. Not only did I have a great football experience, but it was a foundation for me to go on and do extraordinary things with my life,” Senator Booker said. “Thank you, man, for being one of the shining lights of our city. I hope to see you out there on the field as well as on campus. But congratulations, congratulations, and of course, hope to see you when I'm back home.”
