Malcolm X Shabazz High School blends a rich legacy with a bold vision for the future.
Founded in 1912, South Side High School has evolved into a hub for purpose-driven learning, featuring rigorous academic programs, an engineering/career academy focus, and student leadership initiatives supported by community partnerships.
Beyond the classroom, the Bulldogs have built a statewide reputation for competitive excellence. Our programs have captured multiple state championships across girls’ and boys’ basketball, football, and track, while our student-athletes and alumni consistently distinguish themselves at the collegiate and professional levels.
Shabazz’s impact extends far beyond athletics. Our graduates contribute meaningfully across music, politics, business, and sports, underscoring the school’s role as a cornerstone in Newark’s educational and cultural life.

Newark Board of Education is gearing up for an exciting season of winter sports, following an unforgettable fall athletic season. Student-athletes wrapped up the fall season with remarkable achievements, including numerous state qualifications, sectional championships, and the historic accomplishment of the Malcolm X Shabazz Bulldogs football team making it to the NJSIAA Football State Championship for the first time in school history. Malcolm X Shabazz High School Football had a historic season that instilled Bulldog pride in everyone in the Newark community. After winning six consecutive away games, the Bulldogs made it to the Group 2 State Championship game against Rumson-Fair Haven at Rutgers SHI Stadium in Piscataway – an outstanding accomplishment for the team and the school community.
